I was brought up in Chile, the son of South American Mission Society (SAMS) missionaries. I studied modern Iberian and Latin American regional studies at King’s College London. I have always had a personal faith in the Lord and many years ago felt that God was calling me to work in the Paraguayan Chaco among indigenous people.

My aim is to build up the body of Christ in the Paraguayan Chaco by helping indigenous leaders to “teach what is in accord with sound doctrine” and “bring God’s word to light”. This is at a time when non-Christian sects targeting indigenous communities are appearing and causing confusion in some of the churches.

Tim’s story

I have focused on Bible translation work for more than 25 years, coordinating the translation of the New Testament into the Énxet language from 1990-1997. From 2000-2005, I participated in the production of reading materials for use in indigenous schools, acting as a consultant for the Paraguayan Ministry of Education. From 2003 I worked as part of a team translating the Old Testament into Énxet in Rio Verde, which went on to include a complete revision of the 1997 New Testament. The complete Énxet Bible was launched in April 2016.

In consultation with the Anglican church of Paraguay I will now be using the translation office in Rio Verde for writing, translating and producing training material in the Énxet language for indigenous Christian leaders. I will also be travelling to indigenous communities with other missionary colleagues for Bible teaching and study in the churches.

I am part of Church Mission Society because we are in the business of making Jesus known. As Psalm 67 says, “that your ways may be known on earth, your salvation among all nations”. Our commitment is about making sure that people come to faith through hearing God’s word and through seeing the evidence of lives transformed – lived out day by day. Being part of CMS means joining a global family committed to Jesus Christ and committed to making him known in all places.
