Children are growing up not knowing the Word of God – partly because parents are not teaching them Christian values, and also because children’s ministry workers are not trained. This means they can end up misleading children by not modelling what they teach. Alongside this, in a context where children have experienced conflict and are living in refugee camps, some parents struggle to understand traumatised children.

I work for ACROSS, a non-governmental organisation that seeks to see the local church become a resource and a vibrant centre for hope, help and healing in the communities they serve.

  • DR Congo: ongoing discussions

On Tuesday 7 May a roundtable discussion will bring together a number of people involved in making disciples in contexts affected by conflict to consider “The Role of Women and Youth in Implementing Wholistic Discipleship Programmes in eastern DRC”. Sam’s story

Although ACROSS is a South Sudanese charity, I am now based in Arua, northern Uganda, working with South Sudanese refugees in nearby camps. My focus is children’s ministry. I help to plan, implement, evaluate and monitor progress for the Across children’s ministry programme. I also collaborate with other agencies with similar aims and with local churches in the refugee camps.

I love Jesus and gave my life to him in 2000 and since then I’ve served God, particularly in children’s ministry. After receiving theological training between 2000 and 2003, I realised my call to work in teaching children. I completed training in working with children as well as in equipping other adults in this field.

I was involved in training children’s ministry workers in the holistic needs of children, including trauma healing. I began working with ACROSS in 2011, engaging local churches and communities to better support, protect and understand children, and equipping churches to allow children to participate in the life of the church. I have been given lots of new insights into effective children’s ministry.

I am happy to serve God together with other local partners through my involvement in CMS-Africa. Being part of CMS-Africa helps me learn from the team and gives me opportunities to network and collaborate. Together, we are successfully building the body of Christ in Africa and beyond.
