Flavio’s story

As a child, my family only went to church on special occasions, like baptisms and weddings. At age 26, I had a personal encounter with Jesus. Through my church’s teaching, I grew in my knowledge of the gospel and over the years I started speaking at church and leading a small group.

I led the youth of the parish for two years, developing practical experience of counselling, preaching, and evangelism. In 2002, I was appointed minister in charge of Cristo Libertador Anglican Church where I remained until my election to the episcopate in 2011. Alongside this, I studied theology, graduating in 2005 and was ordained presbyter in 2006. Later, I taught mission, discipleship and apologetics at the Anglican seminary.

In June 2012 I was made auxiliary bishop in the Diocese of Recife. Our main objectives have been the formation of new leaders, the planting of new churches and strengthening the church presence in the region to make it a diocese.

At the end of 2017, I felt a strong call from God to leave the region in the hands of another bishop and get more involved with outlying Brazilian areas. I started training and supporting church leaders online with occasional visits. During this period, I planted a church in the City of Joao Pessoa (Vine Anglican Church).

In 2019, I moved with my family to Olinda to take over from a rector who was retiring, to revitalise Agua Viva church. Here, I am focusing on strengthening the gospel in the community, developing leaders and planting churches.

I am also starting a study centre for training lay people and clergy, helping to discern the call and vocation of each person. Longer term, my wife (a teacher) and I hope to also be able to start a day-care and school offering high-quality early childhood education.

I’m married to Lene, and together we have two children, Daniel and Pedro. My son Flavio was born during my youth and he has now given me a wonderful grandson, Miguel.
