Pioneer open days and evenings 2025

Pioneer open days and evenings 2025

Coming to an open day could be the first step on an exhilarating journey – for you or for someone you know.

by Helen Harwood,

  • Are you a pioneer?
    • Interested in reaching out to new places and new people for God?
  • Are you an encourager?
    • Do you know people who are into pioneering, reaching into new places and reaching out to new people?

On this journey of faith there are lots of opportunities to connect with others while following God, and also to pick up skills.

More than a visit

CMS offers a brilliant opportunity to do just this – and also to work your way to a university award, validated by Durham University.

You may be excited about learning new ways to engage in mission, or you might even be thinking, “What have I got to offer?” We can help you uncover your skills, and develop them.

We’d love you to get in touch and discuss more with us, or perhaps join us for one of our open day or open evening sessions

As Sarah Clarke, our Undergraduate Lead, says: “An open day is more than a visit. It’s a chance to experience the energy of our community, meet passionate minds, and start imagining where your journey could take you.”

One of our undergraduate students told me: “I came to the open day, I loved what I heard. I felt excited. It was so welcoming.”

New possibilities

I recently interviewed an undergraduate student and asked how things were going (after one term). I was delighted to get the reply… “It’s mind blowing. There’s a lot to take in. It’s been fantastic.”

What is especially pleasing for some of our students is the chance to pass on those opportunities to others, to empower those around them.

One of our recent MA graduates went on to lead a church and told me, “It’s just been a really fluid journey in that sense, just giving people those possibilities. I think that’s been pioneering, seeing the possibilities in people.”

University qualifications

Our awards, in Theology, Ministry and Mission, are validated by Durham University as part of the Common Awards.

You can join us for one, two or three years to study for a certificate, postgraduate certificate, diploma, BA or MA with a focus on pioneering in general, or an African or Asian Christianity focus.

We have a lot of experience in training pioneers to use their gifts, especially ‘the gift of not fitting in’.

And we never stop developing our options, as Dr Nuam Hatzaw, our Asian Christianity lecturer, told me:

Always innovating

“CMS’s Asian Christianity pathway allows students to gain a rich understanding of Asian Christianity. It’s a rare and exciting opportunity to dive deeply into Asian Christianity and learn from knowledgeable and experienced tutors, all while engaged in an intentional, practice-focused, diverse community with students from around the world.”

It is wonderful to announce that this route is now an option for ordination training. So, ordinands in the Church of England can train with us too, whether they are designated as pioneers or not. We work through a partnership with Ripon College Cuddesdon.

We can offer an optional tour of Cuddesdon to all those who are interested in ordinand training with us and you can attend one of the onsite open days. You can follow an ordination route with a focus on pioneering mission, or African or Asian Christianity.

Our onsite open days are 10.30am to 2pm and our open evenings online run from 7pm to 8.30pm. We look forward to meeting you!
