DR Congo: Heal, Recover, Rebuild
People in DRC have suffered much evil. Help them overcome evil with good.
The violence that consumed the city of Goma, DR Congo, in January and February was evil.
We saw brutal images of people maimed and killed by rebel forces and heard cries of anguish on videos that were sent to us.
As people in DRC pick up the pieces of their shattered lives, we must do all we can to help them on this difficult journey.

“We have a chance to show people what it means to have the peace of Jesus, and to make disciples who will live in a way that is different to the world around them.”
Martin Gordon, CMS mission partner and Bishop of Goma
What our partners say about the situation now:
- The rebels now in charge have ordered displaced people to go home – but many have no homes to return to.
- Robberies and looting continue, as does vigilante violence.
- Many people are afraid to go out alone or at night.
- There are fears that children will be recruited to be soldiers. Refusing to join the rebels is dangerous.
As you can see, people in Goma are still living on a knife edge.
We must continue to work, beyond the initial crisis, to make a lasting difference in people’s lives.
“Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.”
Romans 12:21
What has happened so far in Goma, DRC?
God’s love in Goma
In the midst of the atrocities in Goma, our partners on the ground leapt into action. Thanks to wonderful, generous CMS supporters, hundreds of families were able to get the immediate help they needed.
Please help communities heal, recover and rebuild
A gift from you today could
- Help church leaders cope: providing extra training and resources to help pastors manage the increased demands of a congregation and community seeking help and hope.
- Heal deep wounds: meeting the need for counselling and sharing the love and restoration of Jesus, especially with children and young people.
- Share Jesus in new places: with the fighting paused around Goma, some previously unreachable communities are now accessible.
- Promote peace: supporting grassroots peacemaking work, showing that peace with Jesus is possible.
Our supporters’ generosity so far has encouraged and sustained our brothers and sisters serving in DR Congo. Please keep remembering them, to help them recover, rebuild and keep overcoming evil with good – now and into the future.
Everything you give will be gratefully received and prayerfully used to keep overcoming evil with good, in Jesus’ name.
Let’s come together on 11 May to build peace in DR Congo
Violence in Goma has left communities shattered and in fear. Our partners on the ground are responding with courage and faith – but they need our support as many difficult challenges remain.
That’s why we are holding a Week of Prayer from 5 to 11 May for DR Congo, calling on Christians to lift up our brothers and sisters before God and pray for peace – helping them overcome evil with good, today and into the future.
Please join us as a church on Sunday 11 May to stand together in prayer and to give generously, to overcome evil with good in places facing violent conflict.
Resources including a special intercessory prayer by Martin Gordon, CMS mission partner and Bishop of Goma, are available to download below.

A prayer for Goma
God, we pray for Goma:
For the child who freezes every time she hears unfamiliar footsteps
For the pastor whose home and crops were destroyed
For everyone for whom the sounds of gunfire and bombs have become all too normal
We pray for healing
For peace and for peacemakers
For the strength to not be overcome by evil, but to overcome evil with good
For more disciples who will live your way
In your grace, don’t let us forget DRC, we pray.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen
