Community cafe commended for caring
Home Cafe offers hot coffee and a warm welcome to refugees
CMS-trained pioneer Meg Fry and the team at Home Community Cafe were awarded Cafe of Sanctuary status by refugee welcome charity City of Sanctuary in March.
The Home Community Cafe is based in Earlsfield, London, and for the past five years it has been a place of welcome to all, including refugees and asylum seekers. They have worked closely with Just Shelter, who wrote on their Facebook page:
“Home Community Cafe has hosted many events for Just Shelter including fundraising ceilidhs, quizzes and, probably most importantly, Sharing Suppers in which we’ve been able to welcome refugees to share food, stories and music in a place of warmth and welcome.
“Within days of the pandemic lockdown, the cafe provided regular hot meals for Just Shelter to deliver to refugees across South London – from Croydon to Battersea – and continued to do so for many months.
“One of our aims is to educate our communities on the benefits of truly integrating those who have travelled from far and Home Community Cafe encapsulates that welcome in everything they do.”
