Peru: state of emergency

Peru: state of emergency

Pray for Peru, which is in the midst of a nationwide state of emergency. Protests have erupted across much of the country after President Pedro Castillo was impeached by Congress following his attempted “self-coup” this week. He tried to rule by decree and dissolve the Congress, which was already due to vote on his potential impeachment just a few hours later. Vice president Dina Boluarte was sworn in as president on the same whirlwind day, becoming Peru’s first female president in the process. However, protestors are demanding new elections and the release of Castillo, who was detained by his own security detail as he attempted to flee to the Mexican embassy. Protests have turned violent, with seven dead. Airports have been stormed, highways blockaded and police, government and press buildings attacked. Please pray for peace, calm and stability; for justice to be done; for the ongoing political crisis in the country which has a highly unpopular Congress, and for the families mourning the loss of their loved ones.
