This Easter, as we celebrate our new life in Christ, we are shining a spotlight on what God is doing among people who have been pushed to the very edges. New hope is rising in the midst of heartbreaking challenges.

• In DR Congo, churches are filling up with people finding hope in the midst of war and strife.
• In northern Uganda, refugees from conflict in South Sudan are experiencing healing from trauma.
• And in South Sudan itself, avowed enemies are walking the path to peace and reconciliation.

In DR Congo, in the eastern city of Goma, we find a people pushed to the very edges. Large parts of the population in eastern DRC have known only war during their lifetimes, with last year’s rebel army takeover only the latest milestone.

Thanks in no small part to the generous support of the CMS family following this invasion last year, we are seeing many wonderful things as our partners join in with what God is doing.

According to CMS mission partner Bishop Martin Gordon, church is the one institution people in DR Congo still trust. “When war came, people looked to the churches for every kind of help, as well as for hope.”

Today, many people are coming to Sunday services, eager to know more about Jesus. People who have lost loved ones, homes and livelihoods. In the presence of a loving Father, people are finding the safety they need to work through their painful experiences and start to heal, forgive and move forward.

Trauma healing is an area where we see God at work, not just in Goma but in refugee camps in Uganda. Thousands of South Sudanese refugees are finding a way forward after unthinkable tragedy. Your support can help train more people in trauma healing.

And in South Sudan, community peacemaking work, often led by women, is bearing fruit.

In Walikale, a few hours west of Goma, a witch doctor’s life was radically changed by Jesus. On hearing the good news preached, the witch doctor gave his life to Jesus and is now ready to serve him. There are many more stories like this one.

But the need remains urgent. A regular gift from you could support our partners and local churches as they help renew hope in the hearts of people pushed to the edges by war and violence.

A hunger for Jesus

Right now, there is a great hunger for Jesus in the Middle East. In response, women like Mariam* are stepping out in faith.

Following Jesus cost Mariam all she had – her husband tore up her Bible, beat her and took her children away.

Not long after, a CMS partner saw Mariam’s potential and invited her to take part in mission training. This training equipped Mariam to share her faith with others, to respond to people’s questions about Jesus and nurture the faith of new believers. 

The harvest is plentiful

Today, Mariam leads a group of more than 80 women who have turned to Jesus and need someone to guide them in their faith.

There are many women like Mariam who are reaching out to hundreds of others across the Middle East – but many more are needed. With your support, many more women can receive the training they need to share the gospel and make disciples at this crucial time. 

UPDATE: “Thousands are hungry for Jesus”

I’ve just returned from the Middle East, where – despite conflict and hardship – I’ve seen God moving in remarkable ways.

The missionaries we support are run off their feet – answering people’s questions, helping them study the Bible and encouraging new believers in their faith. Praise God!

At the heart of this movement are courageous women serving in some of the region’s most challenging places.

S* told me she is actually thankful she became a refugee from Syria: “If I didn’t have to flee my home, I might never have met Jesus.” Today, she serves in a local church, helping children discover Jesus’ love.

At this time of year I think of my birthplace, Bethlehem, and of Mary, a humble woman through whom God brought light into the world. Today, women across the Middle East still carry that light into their communities.
