Many Tanzanian Christians in areas where they are in a minority are struggling. They are often pushed out of the work force due to their faith, living with trauma and under pressure from dominant religious systems.

Zanzibar, a collection of islands off Tanzania’s east coast, is one of the places where Christians are most marginalised. In this difficult environment, we will come alongside local Christians to help them flourish as followers of Jesus and to share God’s love with their neighbours.

Working with a team already in place, we will develop and deliver discipleship training for local Christians, assist in trauma healing and build unity across denominational divides.

Dave will help develop discipleship models to suit the specific needs of local Christians, especially believers from a majority- faith background. He will also support local churches from different denominations to break down barriers and work together to reach those around them with God’s love.

Tricia will help continually evaluate and improve the team’s work in order to make sure it’s as effective as possible. She will also train colleagues in collecting data and sharing stories that will inspire others to be part of this vital work among people at the edges.

Our story

We met at All Nations Christian College in 2010, having a shared heart for the global church and serving in mission. Two-years later we married, and have since been joined by our two wonderful boys.

Following Jesus led Dave to serving with the Anglican church for almost 15 years; he was ordained in 2023 and describes himself as a missionary priest! Tricia has worked for churches, NGOs and latterly has worked in research and evaluation with a global organisation. They previously served in mission elsewhere in Tanzania.

We have been asking God ‘what’s coming next?’ for a couple of years and are excited to see how he has brought things together for us to join his mission with Christians on the edge in coastal Tanzania.

In Khlong Toei, the biggest slum community in Bangkok, 100,000 people are living in material poverty, unaware of their God-given worth.

We want to show Jesus’ love for these people on the margins through sharing everyday life and being good neighbours. As we are blessed by new relationships, we bring an outsider’s perspective that sees the assets in a community that is often overlooked.

Having lived in this slum community since 2014, we have seen that for many families, life is fragile and chaotic. Many people are living simply to survive, and this hand-to-mouth existence means a family can quickly face crisis if the breadwinner is unable to work and pay the rent on time.

The most important aspect of our ministry is being present in this community, investing in relationships, listening deeply and sharing in people’s joys and sorrows. Day-to-day, this could mean taking someone to hospital, visiting a neighbour in prison, helping to fight evictions, supporting local leaders, or just being a listening ear.

We also support local families to stay together as poverty is the driver for the high number of orphanages in Thailand. Through Step Ahead Thailand (SAT), we offer support to families who need it with the Keeping Families Together project.

We hope to see family crises averted, parents supported and children living stable and fulfilled lives. We hope to see people find new space to dream and use God-given skills, and that the local church will be empowered to bless and include those on the margins.

Jon is also working towards seeing all children in safe and nurturing families through his role on the Alternative Care Thailand (ACT) team, which is working with the Thai government to reform the care system. Jon uses his medical background to advocate for care reform, bringing a trauma-informed perspective from his years of working as a GP.

We hope that this work will lead to policy change that will eventually trickle down to families in communities like ours.

Our story

We both grew up in Christian families and made decisions to follow Jesus for ourselves as young teenagers, knowing that this commitment could take us anywhere!

We met while doing our A-levels and got married while at university. We have three children, Elliot, Sam and Bow.

Around 2012, we began to feel unsettled about the divisions and social inequality in our world. As we spent time in the gospels, we realised that following Jesus should take us on a downwards journey towards the people and places others avoid. On holiday in Thailand, we found the contrast between rich and poor confronting – and then in 2014 we moved to live in the Khlong Toei slum community.

North Africa and the Middle East are tough places to be a missionary. During our years serving this region, we have known people imprisoned, abducted and deported, not to mention the less critical pressures that come with living in nations with limited access to the gospel. There is a great need for pastoral care among the workers in this region, as well as training for new workers.

We help grow effective teams and ministries through personnel development from our base in Spain and travelling to support workers across the region. These are primarily missionaries with Youth With A Mission (YWAM) and may also include those affiliated to other agencies.

We have seen that by creating space for people to meet with God and process what is going on in their lives in ministry, they are able to stay longer in their ministry location and become more effective in their work.

We do this in a number of different ways: through leadership seminars, guided debriefs, creative retreat days, guided spiritual retreats, group and individual spiritual guidance and helping people connect with God through nature.

Our week-long, online leadership seminar offers leaders the opportunity to reflect on their leadership journey. This can shed light on many unprocessed experiences people have been carrying with them, which often leads them to request debriefing.

Our region is full of mountains! Tim has trained as a mountain leader and is developing a ministry of mountain journeys and wilderness encounters where people find space to connect with God in nature.

Lots of leaders in this region say they need spiritual guidance, and individual spiritual direction is a primary way we support people working in the region.

Additionally, we offer group spiritual direction as part of a retreat, to facilitate reflection and help people connect with the presence and movement of God in their lives.

Miranda is part of a team offering training for spiritual directors, taking them through a three-year programme specific to spiritual formation in cross-cultural contexts, including the Muslim world.

Locally, we seek to build community and deepen connection through offering retreat days, open mic story nights and a sabbath meal.

Our story

We have felt called to mission since early adulthood and have previously worked in Mozambique and South Africa. In 2013 we moved to Spain to be part of this ministry to North Africans and those serving them.

We share a passion to see God’s Kingdom come and we have faith that God’s ways will be established even in the toughest places.

More about my work

In obedience to the great commission (Matthew 28:18–20), I am called to make disciples in this time and context.

As pastor of the local church, I shepherd, disciple, accompany, advise and preach the gospel to as many people as possible. I train and help to grow future leaders of the church in the region.

As a clergyman of the Anglican Church of Peru, I am supporting the bishop in the evangelisation and shepherding of the local church. As rector of the Cristo Redentor Arequipa church, I serve in discipleship, accompaniment, counselling and preaching of the gospel.

Within the diocese, I am a member of the formation department, which allows me to support the training of new and future leaders for the church. I was elected diocesan treasurer, and gladly serve in this area, as part of the diocesan board of directors.

My story

I am married to Marivel Nina Duran, both natives of Puno, with two children: Víctor Emmanuel, a medical student and María Isabella, a secondary school student.

I studied at the Anglican Seminary “Santos Agustinos”, which I passed satisfactorily, to later be ordained Deacon (January, 2013) and priest (November 2013). In the year 2017 we were sent (the whole family) to Chile, to study at the CEP of the Anglican province of Chile, for a period of three years, successfully completing the studies. We returned to Peru in 2020, to serve in Arequipa, where we currently live.

Aware of the need for the preaching of the gospel, in all places and times, we join CMS to serve this purpose and for whatever God wants to use us. As a family, we want to be an instrument of God in his mission, to disciple, and in the preaching of the gospel.

Discipleship is very important in the Christian life – to equip each of us to become mature in our faith, and to share the love of God through our words and our actions. I am the coordinator of Christian education in the Diocese of Aru.

The Diocese of Aru is in the north-east of DR of Congo, not far from the borders with Uganda and South Sudan. There is instability in the region, and travel around the diocese is extremely challenging. There are also several different languages spoken here, and we try to make sure that people can access discipleship materials in their mother tongue.

The main resource we use for discipleship in our diocese is the Rooted in Jesus course, which helps Christians, whether new to faith or following Jesus for a long time, to deepen their understanding of their faith and to see their Jesus shape their lives.

My role is to facilitate Rooted in Jesus groups that are meeting in different areas. This means supporting leaders by visiting in person and following up by phone, encouraging groups as they face challenges and delays, organising the translation of materials into the different local languages and ensuring groups have those resources. I also visit each group when they finish the course to present certificates.

Participants in the courses have spoken about how they had an impact, with one commenting: “Before Rooted in Jesus we were in ignorance about Jesus Christ, what he asked his disciples to do, and how to know the will of God. This teaching is very important, and if we all put it into practice, our church will truly grow and change.”

My story

After finishing school I worked as a teacher, before the church recommended me for theological training. I studied in Bunia (south of Aru, still in Ituri Province), then later took a degree in theology at the Universite de Salama Aru (having worked with the diocese in between).

I then worked with CMS mission partner Peter Wyard in Christian education in the Diocese of Aru. Peter mentored me throughout his time in DRC, and I took up my current role when Peter retired.

After many years of terrorism by the Lord’s Resistance Army, which only ended in 2010, Gulu is a place where people are still dealing with trauma and want to learn more about how best to use their resources.

We are both called to help people grow in faith, in different ways. We are committed to working alongside the Diocese of Northern Uganda (DNU) towards their vision of giving local Christians the tools they need to live out their faith in all areas of life.

Sarah is called to work with the staff at Archbishop Janani Luwum Theological College. Here, she trains clergy and readers. Simon works with the diocese to help people in the church and wider community grow in faith and explore ways to build financial stability through agriculture and keeping livestock.

Sarah works with staff and students at the theological college to coordinate training and supervise students in the early years of their ministry. As she leads the college, Sarah joins the rest of the staff in seeking the guidance of the Spirit as she, fellow staff members and the student body (around 25 people from northern Uganda and South Sudan) learn from Scripture, pray and worship God together. As college students grow the food they need, Sarah hopes to encourage good agricultural practices alongside good ministerial practice.

Simon works within the diocese to help disciple local Christians using resources designed for a culture where people don’t have easy access to books. Having previously worked as an economist, he also works with communities in developing ways in which Christians and churches can become more financially self-sufficient. The area is rich in fertile land, which can produce food for the needs of a family and a bit extra to sell for necessities.

Our story

Sarah worked as a short-term mission partner with CMS from 1988 to 1990 in western Uganda and we have both long been aware of a call to mission. We have three adult children and are confident of our call to serve in these complementary roles. We are both priests in the Church of England and have served in rural parishes in south Shropshire for the last 24 years.

Sarah is excited by life and especially loves exploring the ways of God in the world. She is enthused by this calling to live on the edges in Gulu and work with both staff and students to develop a rounded understanding of what it is to be part of the Church in that place through prayer, study and work.

Simon came to faith following a profound experience of God in his late teens, which blossomed into a call to ordination. He first gained a degree in economics and worked as an investment analyst. He has combined parish experience and serving on general synod alongside three overseas mission visits. For him, this call draws on his experience of the wonderful economy of God and he looks forward to learning from local churches and working with them towards a deepening of Christian discipleship and greater economic development.

More about my work

I am a teacher, lay evangelist, member of AMARE’s Provincial Team of South America (affiliated to Mothers’ Union), a pastoral advisor and a member of the Diocesan Council of Northern Argentina.

My role is to support leaders and members of the Diocese of Northern Argentina to ensure the continuation of evangelism and to seek brother- and sisterhood links with members of other dioceses of the Anglican communion for investing back into the territory.

I seek to be one of the bridges between young people and adults, to take into account their vision as children of God, to be one of the representatives of indigenous peoples to other dioceses, and to accompany children and women pastorally.

My story

I am from the Wichí indigenous culture with Argentinian nationality. I grew up in a family of faith in God. Since I was a child I was instilled in obedience to the word of God, my family taught me to apply the evangelical teachings and they warned me to be careful with intercultural relationships.

However, in the state school I learned to generate relationships with others from other cultures. I have always liked socialising with others, so I decided to travel to other places to share about our reality and to learn from others, working with young people and women from the community from the evangelical church.

From a very young age when I finished my high school studies, I worked teaching my Wichí language and culture in secondary school. I also worked for the Education and Culture Ministry helping teachers in bilingual and intercultural education [Spanish and Wichí]. At the same time, I was always with older women who encouraged others in the local churches.

Being part of CMS means, for me, being part of the Lord’s workers to announce salvation, also using the gifts that God has given me and growing in faith together with others, and above all obeying Jesus’ command “go into the world; and preach the gospel to every creature”.

I lead a team for a church plant in Salta, teaching and training the team.

San Andrés (my church) entrusted me with the task of forming a team for a future plant in one of the neighbourhoods of our city, as part of our vision of multiplication.

My role is to define and develop a teamwork plan, vision and structure of the future community.

In addition, I invest 20 per cent of my time in training leaders of the indigenous Wichí communities in the north of our province.

My story

I was born into a very large Christian family; I am the second of 10 siblings. I had the privilege of always being a part of the Anglican Church. At the age of 25, after completing my studies in biochemistry, I was encouraged strongly by my church community to receive formal training. That is why I travel to Chile to study at the Centro de Estudio Pastorales, Anglican seminary. During the three years of study, I have been encouraged and challenged by studying the word of God and in pastoral ministry.

I love being able to share with others what I have learned, encouraging and challenging them to deepen their relationship with God, walking with them in the process of growing and taking new opportunities. Not only do I teach theology but also how this is applied and has implication in every area of our life.

CMS’s support helps me to focus more time on teaching and pastoral work. It is a privilege for me to be part of the missionary society in the mission that God has entrusted us: to make disciples for the glory of him.

From the outside, Brazil seems like a country full of Christians, but this hides a reality of many people being beyond the reach of established churches. We are passionate about seeing people meet Jesus, even in unlikely places.

We are both originally from Brazil, and believe God called us to go back to our home country to use our gifts, background and passion to share the gospel. We have settled in the state of São Paulo, near a rapidly growing area called Indaiatuba. At the heart of the city is a 15km-long park where lots of people spend time socialising, playing sports and attending cultural events. We aim to be Jesus’ presence there among young adults and families who don’t yet know that Jesus is for them.

We are leading a project in partnership with the city’s secretary of sports, developing sports activities as a way of showing God’s love in word and deed to local families using the facilities in the park.

We are also in conversation with a Christian organisation about working together to reach out to and empower families in a disadvantaged area of Indaiatuba called Tancredo. Noemi wants to use her background in nutrition and healthcare skills and Marcio his passion for the young adults to serve the community in different ways.

We would like to see a new community being formed, where people who are beyond the reach of traditional church find meaningful relationships, discover spirituality, and where students, young adults and families engage with God’s love and his salvation plan.

Our story

Marcio became a Christian in São Paulo when he was a teenager. Noemi, the daughter of missionaries, grew up in Senegal, West Africa, and always knew she wanted to serve God. She has long wanted to use her nutrition qualifications to help people have a better life physically as well as spiritually and loves ministering to people over meals, like Jesus did.

Marcio’s upbringing was coloured by his father’s alcoholism, but after a period of healing in his teens, God placed in his heart a strong desire to shepherd and share the gospel with young people and young adults.

Marcio has now been involved in ministry with young people in Brazil, Italy and the UK for a total of 25 years.

Now he is excited that God is using him to reach people with the gospel in his home country again.

The Church in South Sudan has a great need of training for leaders. Many leaders used to travel far away for in-depth theological training, but CMS-Africa now offers practical, transformative teaching locally through the Samaritan Strategy training programme.

As a trainer with the Samaritan Strategy programme as well as a teacher with the Nile Theological College and a pastor with the Way of Life Congregation, I teach theological and practical subjects that help people to live out the gospel in their everyday lives.

My story

My parents were from a Roman Catholic background where everyone grew up going to the same church. As a teenager, I heard an evangelistic message for the first time at a youth conference and asked Jesus to come into my life as my Lord and Saviour.

Over the next few years, I got to see most of Sudan through my ministry with evangelistic teams through OM Sudan before studying at Jordan Theological Seminary, where I also led a Sudanese congregation. At the same time, I led an OM team called Love Middle East.

Later, I was ordained as a pastor at the Presbyterian Church of Sudan in Khartoum, where I served a local congregation for four years before returning to Jordan for two years to study Hebrew and write my Master’s thesis.

I have been a lecturer at Nile Theological College since 2008, and pastor of Way of Life Congregation Juba since 2016.

I met former CMS-Africa director Dennis Tongoi on a trip to Kenya in the early 2000s and heard about the Samaritan Strategy materials and the vision behind the programme. I was challenged. I attended a Financial Freedom for Families (F4) (financial literacy training founded on biblical principles) course and became a facilitator myself a few years later.

I am passionate about the CMS-Africa training because of its practicality. I am happy to be part of this movement because of the real impact of this training.

Thirty years after the Velvet Revolution ended Soviet rule in the Czech Republic, it is now the most secular country in Eastern Europe according to a 2017 Pew Research survey. Yet there is growing interest in the spiritual. We seek to join in with what God has started in one such community, a small Anglican congregation in the city of Brno, to see a vibrant Christian community develop.

The harsh realities of the Soviet era continue to cast a shadow. While attitudes towards the church were previously ambiguous, imposed atheism and the persecution of believers (from brutal force to subtle harassment) have left the community of faith scarred and society deeply sceptical.

Yet there is growing interest in the spiritual. Evangelical and charismatic congregations, along with new worshipping communities, are connecting with those exploring faith and seeing small yet consistent growth. We seek to join in with what God has started in one such community, a small Anglican congregation in the city of Brno, to see a vibrant Christian community develop.

Planted in 2011 following requests for worship, the congregation meets for monthly evening services. We dream of seeing this become a Christian community (of both Czechs and internationals) committed to the practice of missional hospitality, blessing the city and connecting with the significant student population. We want to encounter God through exploring the Bible, breaking bread together and developing a church community where everyone can play their part in the mission of God.

Brno, a former industrial centre and the Czech Republic’s second largest and fastest growing city after Prague, has reimagined itself as a centre for technology, engineering and research. It is a young city, home to six public universities and 80,000 students. We know the city from Petra’s family connections and time studying there.

Our story

Petra, a Czech, moved to Glasgow in 2005, encountered Jesus and became involved in church life. As she grew in her faith, her pastor encouraged Petra to explore theological studies.

Lea, from Shropshire, came to faith as a child and was shaped by his parents’ example of sharing faith and nurturing new believers. At a young age he felt called to ordination, enthusiastically telling his teacher, “One day, miss, I will be a vicar.”

We met at International Christian College, where there was a strong emphasis on mission and global Christianity.

We married in 2009 and have two children, Olivia and Theodore.

After working with children and families at a church in Essex, Lea was ordained in 2016. Lea completed his curacy in north Essex and Petra works as a photographer.

Lea has spent time with Anglican chaplaincies in Prague, Moscow and Brussels, and learned the Czech language.

We have been discerning a call to long-term ministry in the Czech Republic for a number of years.

More about Indira’s work

Indira recently assumed the leadership of the National Mission Commission of Nepal (NMCN), the national Christian indigenous, interdenominational and non-profit social organisation based in Kathmandu.

Indira’s story

Indira grew up in a Christian family but personally accepted Christ as her Saviour when she was 14 years old. Since then, she committed her life to God and became involved in various spheres of God’s mission through different works.

She began working in NMCN in 2005 and it was there when she first felt that her missional journey for God’s Kingdom had truly begun. She became inspired to do something that would make a difference in the lives of people and for them to know Jesus in their life. This led her to go to Bible College with her husband for further theological education.

They both attended the International Graduate school of Leadership (IGSL) in Philippines for three years. After graduating from IGSL, together with her husband, Indira started to teach in a Bible College and began conducting Bible study and discipleship with young people.

She also started to help in their local church ministry, all the while experiencing God working through them to reach out to others. Indira is grateful for God’s faithfulness in every step of her life, which gives her strength to keep on moving, working for God’s kingdom and being part of God’s mission.
