Gap year: YuvaLok school, India

This placement is part of our unique new Wonder gap year experience.

We are looking for a gap year student to volunteer at YuvaLok, a not-for-profit NGO which provides free education, vocational training, food and healthcare to over 1,500 children.

YuvaLok is looking for teaching assistants to work with lower school children. This will involve helping in the classroom, one-on-one reading and working with children after school to improve learning.

Volunteers will be based in Bangalore, and accommodation can be arranged through the foundation.

Church Mission Society is recognised by Global Connections as operating under the Code of Best Practice in Short-Term Mission 2019 and 2020

The school currently has 525 students, with about 40 kids per class up to year 10. Most of the children are from urban deprived areas; some from children’s homes, most from single parent-families. Many of the kids initially come to school because of the free food, as both breakfast and lunch are provided.

Some children need extra help with getting their English skills up to speed as lessons are taught in English, while most of the children speak Kannada or Hindi at home.

YuvaLok is looking for a gap year volunteer who is:

  • a self-starter
  • interested in working with small children
  • invested in safeguarding
  • a Christian
