Gap year: Sri Lanka

This placement is part of our unique new Wonder gap year experience.

We are looking for a gap year student to volunteer at Kedella, the respite therapeutic centre for children who are survivors of abuse in Sri Lanka.

The centre, located in the Western Province, is dedicated to helping children to recover from the trauma of abuse (including sexual) and can take up to eight girls and eight boys at a time. Children at the centre live together in community, receiving schooling lessons, as well as counselling and psychotherapeutic support onsite.

Church Mission Society is recognised by Global Connections as operating under the Code of Best Practice in Short-Term Mission 2019 and 2020

Children generally stay for three months. The centre operates with one set of house parents for the boys, and one set for the girls, and other staff, from counsellors to security. Confidentiality of children is maintained to prevent further trauma to the child.

CMS is looking for volunteers who:

  • have strong Christian values
  • will be respectful of the local culture and dress code (legs and shoulders need to be covered)
  • are willing to work through a translator, as most kids will speak either Tamil or Singhalese
  • are good at taking initiative, and good at working with children (volunteers can help with English teaching, crafts, music, games, but will need to take the lead on organising many of these activities)

To find out more, or if you think this could be the gap year for you, email Susann at

NB We are monitoring the situation in Sri Lanka following the horrific Easter Sunday attacks and are mindful of current Foreign Office travel advice. Any potential placement will be carefully reviewed according to the current circumstances and the advice of our partners in Sri Lanka.
