Project Development Worker

Our partners in the Diocese of Katanga, DR Congo, are looking for a project development worker to develop the Congo Children Trust’s programme with street children.

The project has grown significantly in recent years and is supporting approximately 100 street children weekly through five centres.

The number of street children in Lubumbashi continues to grow, due to the downturn in the copper mining industry. Many people have lost work and are struggling financially.

Parents cannot always afford to feed their families and their children end up on the street.

That’s where you come in: by bringing your gifts to this role you will help to continue the fight to change this situation.

The candidate is required to be qualified, highly motivated and competent with relevant experience.

The essential duties and responsibilities are:

  • to work alongside the manager and the Kimbilio team to help to continue to develop the street children programme

Potential roles could include developing the Maison Kimbilio site where there is a vision for vocational training workshops (woodwork/IT training), a primary school, and more organised sporting activities.  There are already basic facilities in place that could be developed by mission partners with the right skills, particularly to train the Kimbilio staff team in good social or youth work practice and alongside Jean Bosco develop and encourage good child care practice across the project.

This role would suit a single person or married couple with a background in youth work, social work, administration or development.  There is much potential for wider project development and Kimbilio would benefit from someone who is flexible and outward looking in their approach.

The historical links between Church Mission Society and the Diocese of Katanga have been developed by a variety of mission partners, youth teams, short term workers and visits by CMS personnel to the Diocese over many years. This project was initially developed by Ian Harvey (former CMS mission partner) and is now managed by Jean Bosco Tshiswaka Kabeya (CMS local partner).  Congo Children Trust continue to support project costs.

Church Mission Society places individuals, couples and families in over 45 countries around the world as we seek to share the love of Jesus and see our world transformed. Our placements are self-funding with extensive support in fundraising given to those who serve long-term (4+ years). All placements are subject to DBS clearance. Church Mission Society is only able to directly test the calling of those who are rooted in UK/European churches.

Terms and conditions depend upon the location of each opening and the duration of the placement offered. Short-term opportunities (4 months to 2 years) are self-funded, with CMS offering residential, cross-cultural training. Long-term mission partners serve for 4-6 years minimum. We work on a fully resourced basis to ensure your funding, learning and support are in place together, through connecting to local churches and your wider networks. Individualised learning plans are developed for preparation and during service for those on long-term service.
