Aida Cuenca - Argentina

My role includes equipping and training various church leadership groups. They include church or zonal treasurers, the AMARE women’s leadership committee and pastoral committees. In other words every person or group which needs organisational training, to be able to understand and apply the principles and tools of effective administration.

The need in our church is to consolidate training in the principles of administration. We understand this to include planning, organisation, direction and oversight of projects generated in the church. Support from Church Mission Society contributes towards covering the cost of the various administration courses, for which I am responsible.

Isaiah said "Here I am, send me." I made his reply my own, in fear and doubt, and with an enormous sense of inadequacy. In this way I responded to God’s call with faith and in tears.

Diocesan secretary of the Anglican diocese of Northern Argentina, with responsibility for the general administration of the diocese.

More about Aida Cuenca

I have been interested in Latin American religious activity and belief since I was a young girl. I took several degree courses in philosophy at university, focusing on Latin American philosophy and the phenomenology of religion. As I reflected on the religious syncretism existing among our peoples I began to seriously question the degree to which the gospel had penetrated into our communities.

The way the gospel has been passed on has often been an obstacle in how our peoples have understood the message. From the ancient forms of the Mass in Latin to the ‘Evangelical’ language often saturated in incomprehensible terminology, the gospel has become dark, confused and heavy with superstition and false knowledge of the person of Jesus Christ and his work of salvation. So the conflict between reason and faith, or the knowledge of God versus the feeling of God has reappeared.

The challenge I am aware of in my own life is to be a bridge-builder. I believe that with good teaching the gospel can be understood, and leaders equipped with the breadth of knowledge and the abilities essential to ministry today.

Being part of Church Mission Society means working in the knowledge that I can make a contribution, even though it is just a small grain of sand, in the extension of the kingdom of God. It means that I can be supported by brothers and sisters who pray and encourage my efforts. It is the body of Christ in action, and the united and diverse church bearing witness to God.
