Brazil is home to more Pentecostals and Catholics than any other country in the world, and yet there are high levels of drug-related violence as well as insufficient health, education and sanitation services. In this context we hope to serve the Church at large in its job of evangelising by working in unity, educating people, raising up leaders and stewarding creation.
To be bridge-builders in Brazil, working across the boundary lines of rich and poor, Catholic and Protestant, and reconciling the Church with its missional call to care for God’s creation
Mark is chaplain of Christ Church, Rio de Janeiro, an international English-speaking church in the city centre. Jess is involved in the social outreach, children’s work and environmental activities of the church community.
More about Jess and Mark Simpson
Mark’s focus at Christ Church is enabling people to meet with Jesus, so evangelism among English speakers in Rio de Janeiro is our priority, fuelled by worship and prayer. Mark trained at St. Mellitus theological college in London and during most of that time we were based in a church on a housing estate in Battersea, London, which is very multicultural and has multiple social disparities. Prior to this Mark was a Classics teacher in Cheltenham.
Jess has worked in a variety of evangelism and children’s projects over the years including Alpha, Happy Child (Criança Feliz) and Word Made Flesh (Palavra Incarnada) in Rio. Beyond our Christ Church activities we co-lead a small children’s project in a fishing community in Magé, a town outside Rio.
Church Mission Society gives clarity to our work through its emphasis on sharing Jesus and changing lives. Through the support and encouragement we receive through CMS, we are constantly called to proclaim the gospel afresh in this generation.
