Catherine Le Tissier and Nick Drayson, Argentina
Nick recently retired as Primate of the Province of South America and Bishop of Northern Argentina. Catherine coordinated the AMARE women’s organisation across the Province.
The church in Northern Argentina has developed through social involvement in indigenous issues, and is on the cutting edge of evangelistic outreach within the cities. Today it is in the midst of huge political and religious change. The Diocese of Northern Argentina seeks leaders who will provide unity and growth as a truly indigenous church. We head a team who are trying to find appropriate ways of doing mission in our various contexts – including leadership, training, administration and mission strategy.
Nick’s role as diocesan bishop involves overseeing more than 150 churches alongside indigenous assistant bishops Mateo and Crisanto. As primate Nick leads the small team of bishops in the Province of South America (Argentina, Bolivia, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay). Catherine encourages AMARE women’s leadership teams across the region as they work with women and families.

Catherine and Nick’s story
In 1976, Nick started working in the Chorote language, eventually publishing a translation of the New Testament in 1997. During those 20 years he developed a deep relationship not only with the Chorotes, but with all the indigenous groups and with Argentina as a nation. He was ordained by the Wichi bishop in 1979. Despite returning to Europe twice (during the Falklands War, and for our children’s schooling) we keep coming back. We got married in 1983 and went to Spain, where we planted churches in Seville, and then to Argentina. Catherine is an occupational therapist and naturally helps rehabilitate people, which is useful in a pastoral setting. Our background in speaking local languages and being familiar with many contexts has equipped us to tackle the role we now fulfil in the diocese.
We were part of South American Mission Society for 25 years, and when this merged with Church Mission Society it was natural to continue the link. However, it is more than that for us; we see CMS above all as a community of mission, and value the commitment to the world church which allows us to give and receive in a wide, yet intimate, context.
