Tom and Verity Clare - Uganda

Due to the civil war in South Sudan which began in 2013, there are over a million South Sudanese refugees currently living in Uganda. Many are living in settlements within reach of Arua in northern Uganda where we will be based. Providing even basic healthcare is a real challenge and it’s why we feel called to the region.

Tom will be based in the Health Department of Madi and West Nile Diocese, working to improve the health of the local population including those in local South Sudanese refugee communities. Verity expects to initially spend most of her time looking after our children and also hopes to get involved with peacebuilding work or English teaching.

Call

To serve the local community, drawing others closer to Jesus as we work to realise the hope of physical, emotional and spiritual restoration.

Role

Tom will be working to improve the health of the local population, including those in local South Sudanese refugee communities. Verity will be mainly looking after our four children, with the possibility of a future role in peacebuilding or teaching English.

More about Tom and Verity Clare

We both grew up in Christian families in the UK. Having had the opportunity to serve on various short-term mission trips, we were each exploring a call to longer term mission when we first met in 2009. At that time, Verity had recently completed a TEFL course and was teaching English to refugees in Nottingham while studying for a masters in peace and reconciliation studies. Tom was in his first year of studying graduate medicine. Since marrying in 2011, God has been helping us grow in reaching out to our local community here in the UK. Tom’s main focus during this time has been his training to become a GP and since 2013 Verity has been a stay-at-home mum to our four children – Ezra, Eli, Simeon and Joel. Following Tom’s qualification as a GP in 2017, we now feel the time is right to follow God’s call overseas.

We recognise our need to draw on the collective wisdom and experience of others as we take this step of faith in moving to Uganda with our young family and feel honoured to be joining the CMS family.
