South West Pioneering Hub
The Southwest Hub is a partnership between three dioceses: Bristol, Exeter and Truro.
There are a number of Hubs around the country. This is the only CMS Hub to offer a module in creation-centred pioneering which looks at mission in the rural church, environmental and food justice, climate, organic farming as a metaphor for pioneering, and creation and Celtic Christian theology and worship.
The South West Hub started in one diocese – Bath and Wells – in 2019 and has grown, refined and adapted with time through relational networks.
We have six values: honesty, vulnerability, playfulness, welcoming diversity, mutual supportiveness and openness to change.

Courses on offer
CMS Certificate in Pioneer Mission
The CMS Certificate course runs in hybrid fashion.
The modules are held every two months for a year. There are six modules:
- Pioneer Mission
- Context and Culture
- Mission Spirituality
- Missional Church
- Missional Entrepreneurship
- Creation-centred Pioneering
The first and last modules are residential weekends for everyone together in person.
The remaining four modules are held over one evening (a Thursday) and one Saturday. Each diocesan group gathers in its local diocesan offices together (eg, Bristol, Truro, Exeter) and joining the other diocesan groups via an online link. The module facilitators are in one place and teach all groups simultaneously.
Course leaders and module facilitators are experienced practitioners as well as established speakers and writers on pioneer mission.
The standard cost of the Certificate is £300 per participant. There are opportunities to give a little more to support others. PCCs, benefices and deaneries can be asked to contribute to the cost. Some bursaries are available. There are some additional costs: accommodation for the residential weekends, occasional meals out and books if you want to buy them. Travel is required from home to the diocesan offices in your diocese and to Sclerder Abbey in East Cornwall and Bristol for the residential weekends. Financial support is available for these where required.

“During my training as a pioneer, I have wondered where all this will lead me? what does the Holy Spirit want from me? Step by step it has led me through the streets, cafes, and houses where immigrants meet.
“Today I find myself helping dozens of asylum seekers and migrants legally and pastorally. Many of them have accompanied me to church. With many of them, we have prayed together. Step by step the Spirit has helped me to meet other Christians and other faiths who also have a calling (ministry) to help asylum seekers and refugees, helping me not to feel alone in this work.
“This pioneering journey is transformative, organic, alive and beating to the rhythm of God’s heart. All praise belongs to him.”
