I pray that God, the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in him. Then you will overflow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit.Romans 15:13 (NLT)
Europe, Middle East and North Africa
Lebanon: Beirut explosion
Pray for Lebanon as the effects of Tuesday’s explosion continue to unfold. With 5,000 injured and a death toll of 135 and counting, pray for the many who have lost loved ones and are dealing with the trauma that comes with such a catastrophe. Pray for comfort and strength for healthcare workers, those digging through the rubble and leaders responding to the situation.
Spain/North Africa: uncertainty ahead
Mission partners M and T report that they are still unable to open their local outreach centre, and ask for prayer for whether, when and how to re-open. Pray for staff members who are there specifically to work at the centre, who are now making decisions about whether to return home or change their ministry focus.
UK: new opportunities arising
CMS pioneer student Sophia Popham, based in Oxford diocese, asks for prayer as she and others develop their online church that has come into being because of lockdown. New opportunities have opened up to people who couldn’t come to the building but are now leading online church and ministering to others. Praise God for these new opportunities and pray for their ministry to flourish. Pray for the church to be open and welcoming and make vulnerable people feel safe.
Philippines: practical help on the ground
Eric and Sandra Read are starting to see neighbours lose their jobs due to COVID-19. They ask for prayer for inspiration and wisdom in how they and the churches can help people beyond just giving rice and food, but to help them get back on their feet.
Nepal: remote staff care
Andrea and Andrew Young, currently in the UK, are in close contact with Kathmandu, working as best they can via Zoom meetings and WhatsApp messages. Pray for patience while they wait for the situation to change, and inspiration to work remotely with United Mission to Nepal (UMN) expats. Andrea and Andrew are also currently developing a UMN staff care group. Pray for them as they do their best, via Zoom, to prepare a group of Nepali staff to become “listeners” for staff who are going through difficulties.
Pray for the region of Latin America as confirmed COVID-19 cases in the region have passed five million. Pray particularly for the overloaded health systems across the region and for those suffering with the virus who are unable to access healthcare. Particularly remember in prayer CMS’s local partners serving in seven countries across the region.
Paraguay: safe travels
Pray for Tim Curtis travelling back to Paraguay on 9 August and then quarantining for two weeks. Pray for a safe journey, an easy quarantine period and for him to soon be safely back home in Rio Verde in the Paraguayan Chaco.
Chile: teaching on evangelism
Alf Cooper is teaching on evangelism at La Trinidad church’s leadership training school. Pray for those being equipped to share the gospel and for many in Chile, and across Latin America, to turn to Jesus during these difficult times.
South Sudan: corruption
President Kiir has admitted publicly that non-oil revenues are not reaching the Treasury but being “diverted into individual accounts”. This is probably just the tip of the iceberg of corruption in the state, but it has huge effects on the government’s ability to meet its commitments. Pray for the re-establishment of order and effective administration in all parts of the country and for active and honest government at the centre.
Sudan: the pandemic and its effects
Sudan now has 12,000 active cases of COVID-19 and is nearing a death toll of 1000. Pray for all affected by COVID-19, whether sick or in lockdown and struggling for basic necessities. Pray for all whose already fragile livelihoods have been devastated by these calamities – and pray for all agencies and local organisations striving to help.
We praise God with CMS-Africa for a new F4 (Financial Freedom for Families) course started at the end of July, consisting of four classes held over three months. Pray for the facilitators, led by Henry Mwaniki, Sara Gitahi and Erik Kimani. Pray for technology not to disappoint and for God to work powerfully in participants’ lives through this simple course.
