Prayer News 17 September 2021

Pause with scripture

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.

Romans 8:28 (NIV)

Worldwide: time of transitions

Pray for everyone who is in transition at this point. Many CMS people in mission are either transitioning back into life in the UK or going out to mission locations to continue their work or with new opportunities in sight. Pray for patience, wisdom and strength during very difficult times.

Latin America

Adelante!

Pray for CMS’s online Latin America conference this weekend, Adelante. Pray for all those preparing, presenting and participating, and that it might be an inspiring time of seeing where God is at work and being inspired to worship, pray and to join in.

Paraguay: rain

Mission partner Tim Curtis writes that despite some rain at the beginning of September, the Chaco region still desperately needs more rain. Give thanks for God’s protection from bushfires and for new guttering at the translation centre (installed by mission associate Chris Hawksbee and his team), which will allow the centre to capture more rainwater. Pray for abundant rain this season.

Guatemala and Honduras: God’s protection

Mission partners Mark and Rosalie Balfour write that some Guatemalan friends of theirs have had to suspend their ministry because of the threat of extortion from one of the gangs, and that the possibility of facing extortion is the norm for anyone running a ministry, church or business. Please pray for all those working with Street Kids Direct and all the organisations it supports in Guatemala and Honduras – for protection from this danger and everything else that they face.

Asia

Myanmar: Aung San Suu Kyi

Politician Aung San Suu Kyi is currently on trial for violating COVID-19 regulations and breaching the Official Secrets Act, while hundreds of civil society groups have urged the United Nations not to recognise Myanmar’s military government. Pray for wisdom for a committee of nine countries set to recommend a candidate to take Myanmar’s UN seat, either a representative from the military or someone from the former Aung San Suu Kyi government.

Philippines: easing COVID-19 restrictions

Caught between a struggling economy and a health emergency, the Philippines recently eased coronavirus restrictions to help get more people back to work and boost the country’s economy. With an official death toll of over 35,000, and tens of thousands of new cases registered every day, pray for strength and stamina for those looking after the sick, and wisdom for decision makers during this very difficult time.

Nepal: COVID-19 vaccines

COVID continues to impact many people in Nepal. Recent government figures showed that over five million people have had at least one dose of a vaccine, but vaccination rates remain lower in rural areas, where immunisation against other diseases has also suffered due to health services’ focus on delivering COVID vaccines. Please pray for the COVID vaccination programme in Nepal to reach the most disadvantaged people and communities, and for better awareness and understanding of the importance of vaccinations.

Africa

DR Congo: recovery from COVID-19

Please pray for local partner Rev Bisoke Balikenga, who recently tested positive for COVID-19. He has received treatment and is self-isolating at home. Pray for him to quickly be restored to full health. CMS-Africa also particularly ask for prayer for peace to become a reality in eastern DR Congo, where ongoing conflicts have caused so much suffering, and where COVID-19 continues to cause loss of life.

Europe, Middle East and North Africa

North Africa: Spirit-led conversations

Mission partners in North Africa share that they have been having some great conversations with the locals. Pray that the Lord will work through these conversations and pray for them as they juggle work and children. Also praise the Lord for a recent breakthrough in getting one of their associations registered. Pray for their business to grow and more opportunities for conversations.

Middle East: travelling for training

Please pray for one of our local partners, who is travelling in the Middle East training others in media and discipleship. Pray for God’s protection on our local partner and those attending the training, and for the training sessions to be even more fruitful and useful than expected. Please pray for CMS regional manager Tanas Alqassis also, who will be doing similar trips next week.

UK: Eco Church demonstration

Mission partners Kailean and Kim Khongsai, working with A Rocha, are running a demonstration day for Eco Churches on 18 September, where they will demonstrate a range of conservation activities at the Wolf Fields nature reserve in Southall. Pray for people to attend and be encouraged to explore what they can do at their church and in their community level for nature.

UK: mission partners in training

Pray for CMS’s mission partners in training who began their training sessions in Oxford this week. Pray for them to absorb as much as they can from this training and for God to bring their attention to things that will be particularly useful for each of them personally.

UK: new academic year for pioneer training

Pray too for all those involved in Pioneer Mission Leadership Training at CMS, where 33 new students started this week, including 10 studying on the new MA route focused on African Christianity, led by Dr Harvey Kwiyani, who joined the staff this week in a part-time role. (Pray for Harvey in his other new part-time role as CEO of Global Connections, the UK network for world mission.) Also joining the team is Tina Hodgett, who will be the pioneer hub coordinator for the South Central Regional Training Partnership.
