“Only with eyes that have cried”: Lament for Lent

Lament for Lent: still needed?

When we created this resource for Lent 2020, it was because we had a sense that people needed a way to grieve things like racial injustice, violence, the climate crisis, the persecution of marginalised groups. And it seemed to us that Christians weren’t always very good at giving space for grief, individually or collectively.

So we released Lament for Lent and were heartened to see hundreds of people gratefully take up this little booklet, telling us how timely it was.

And then the coronavirus crashed in – a tidal wave of fear, loss, anxiety and deprivation that has threatened to drown us all, even as we tried our hardest to make the best of things, to help each other, to find a bit of hope.

As we launched Lamentspace where people could express their grief, we saw how important it was to allow the unsaid to be said. To get to hope, we need to be honest about all the hard stuff.

And so now here we are: Lent 2021. Vaccines have arrived. In lots of ways impossible situations have been overcome by imagination. Spring is coming.

And yet we can’t get away from how much we’ve lost. And so we thought we’d offer Lament for Lent again, for anyone who needed to go to God with their grief and weariness.

As you’ll see in these pages, if you still need to lament, you aren’t alone.
