Prayer News 02 October 2020

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

Matthew 11:28–30 (NIV)

Latin America: stress and exhaustion from ongoing restrictions

Mission partners across the region are noting that many of the people they serve are hitting a “wall” after six months of tight COVID-19 restrictions. Pray for those across the region experiencing mental, emotional and physical symptoms from stress and for our people in mission as they share the hope of Jesus in what continue to be highly challenging conditions.

Argentina: increase in COVID-19

Argentina is now experiencing a massive increase in COVID-19 cases after a previously relatively successful lockdown. Mission associate Michael Browne reports that hospitals in Salta are full and many have caught the virus in the area. Please pray for a reduction in the numbers of cases and particularly for all of our people in mission and partner organisations in the north of Argentina.

Paraguay: increase in COVID-19

Having been a good example of how lockdown could keep numbers of cases low, Paraguay is now also seeing a rapid spread of COVID-19 cases with significant numbers in the indigenous areas of the Chaco. Please pray for our people in mission in the area (Tim Curtis, Victor Gonzalez, Beryl Baker) and for the communities they serve. Also pray for rain as water tanks are empty across the Chaco. In addition, Bev Richardson and Alison and Chris Hawksbee ask for prayers for an end to wildfires, in a large part due to the lack of rain across the country, which are also causing poor air quality in the capital, Asuncion.

South East Asia: new baby

Give thanks for the birth of a baby girl to B and M. Mother and baby are doing well. Do pray for them as a family as they settle into a new routine, and continue to pray that they will be able to go back to their home overseas as soon as the family is fit to travel.

Malaysia: safeguarding training

Pray for mission partner Tim Lee as he delivers the first two days of safeguarding training for Asia-CMS this week and next. He has spent a lot of time planning and preparing the training so please pray it goes well.

Philippines: starting university

Please pray for Eric and Sandra Read’s daughter Atiyyah as she has just started university in the UK. Pray for this transition period, that she will settle in well and make friends. Due to COVID, she has not been able to see her parents since Christmas, so do pray for all of them during this time of separation and that they will be able to get together in the near future.

South Asia: staff retreat and planning

Next week, the theological education institution with which mission partner F works is having a staff retreat and strategic planning week in the hills. Please pray for safety in travel, good spiritual refreshment and wisdom for the strategic planning process.

Uganda: flooding at Kisiizi Hospital

Mission associate Ian Spillman writes that heavy rains have caused much flooding at Kisiizi Hospital and patients have had to be moved out of some wards. Pray God’s grace, enabling and stamina for all those involved in clearing up and keeping the patients safe.

South Africa: trying to return to Uganda

Mission partner Nicci Maxwell is in the UK, with plans to return to Uganda later this year, or early next year. Pray God’s peace over Nicci and for her ability to hear what he is saying to her in this time of waiting. Pray too for those at Potter’s Village as they continue their ministry to babies and children.

DR Congo: rebel activity

Local partner Bisoke Balikenga reports much rebel activity in Bunia, where he has 21 people staying in his home and is struggling to sleep well because of all the tension. Pray God’s peace and protection over Bisoke, his family and all those sheltering in his home. Pray God’s restraint on the forces of evil that are stirring up violence. Please pray too for all those in the Bunia area, for safety and peace. May they come to experience that peace which only God can give, which goes beyond understanding.

DR Congo: Kimbilio school

Local partner Jean Bosco Tshiswaka, who heads up the Kimbilio Centre in Lubumbashi, gives praise for the work on the new school at Kimbilio. They plan to finish the roof in October, before the rains come. Please pray for the work to be completed safely and to a good standard. May God’s presence and peace be felt in the school, both during building and setup, and especially when the children start learning there.

Europe, Middle East and North Africa

UK: new venue needed

Pray for Ruth Sayers in Plymouth, who runs a work club which offers support and practical help for unemployed people. The need for the work club is greater than ever, but the library where the group used to meet is no longer open. Pray for an affordable (or free!), suitable venue to be made available.

UK: relocating and reuniting

Pray for the Kanungha family as they settle into life in Liskeard, Cornwall, where Grace and Festo will both be working with St Martin’s Church. Pray for Grace and the children as they move into a house in Liskeard this week, and for Festo’s spouse visa to come through quickly and easily so they can be together as a family again.

Lebanon: guidance for the future

Nabil and Sarah Shehadi ask for prayer for God’s leading for the future. Pray for the political situation in Lebanon, as well as all the challenges COVID brings with it.

Ukraine: finding a place to meet

Mission partner Alison Giblett asks for prayer as the Tabernacle of the Living God church looks for a new place to meet, and for the second anniversary celebration of what the Lord has done through the church.
