Prayer News 03 April 2020

Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. Ephesians 4:2–3

Cambodia: prayer for the nation

Pray for Cambodia’s population of 16 million in the face of a potential mass breach of human rights across the country. Human Rights Watch reports that Cambodia’s Council of Ministers approved a law this week which would allow the government to restrict all civil and political liberties and target human rights, democracy, and media groups. It is claimed the law is necessary as part of the country’s response to COVID-19, but the bill contains many broad and vague provisions that would violate fundamental rights, and it is not specified why these measures – which would still be in force after the pandemic – are necessary. Pray for those voting on the bill later this week. []

Pray for God to move among the people of Cambodia through miracles and powerful encounters with Jesus and bring his healing and salvation to this country. Pray also for our local partner in Cambodia, Chhinho Saing.

South East Asia: safely out

Give thanks that a mission partner family based in South East Asia were able to travel and arrived safely in Belgium as planned. Pray for them as they have to self-isolate for two weeks. Do pray for their general health and wellbeing and for them as they adjust to yet another country.

South Asia: foodbank

Pray for mission partner F who is now involved in creating food parcels for the families who need it most during a time when many people have lost their income due to lockdown. Pray that the foodbanks will be able to meet the needs around the country.

South Asia: gappers

Pray for our gap year students in South Asia as they are also in lockdown and therefore their time is being spent a bit differently than originally planned. Pray that their time abroad will still be fruitful.

Latin America

Argentina: continuing translation

David and Shelley Stokes write that in March, the Argentine Bible Society helped run another workshop for potential translators for the Bermejo Wichi New Testament. The intention was to hold several more workshops in neighbouring zones before taking decisions about the team of (probably six) translators, but this is now on hold due to lockdown. It is not yet clear whether the annual training courses in Juarez in May or Misión La Paz in June will be able to go ahead. Pray for the Lord to open up the way for what he wants to happen this year, and for good decisions about what events to suspend!

Paraguay: nursing in the Chaco

Please pray for mission associate Beryl Baker, a nurse serving in the Paraguayan Chaco, mainly amongst indigenous peoples in quite isolated areas.

DR Congo: continuing church ministry

Please give thanks for the continuing ministry of the church in Goma, even during lockdown. A bishop in the area writes that he has started broadcasting an hour-long service every morning from the local radio station, reaching regular churchgoers as well as new listeners. Praise God for this initiative and for another opportunity for mission and evangelism, which many people are responding to. The bishop writes, “The Bible recommends us to be ready to serve God in good and bad situations. Even if the church buildings are locked, heaven is not locked for God’s children. And nothing can separate us from the love of God that we have through Jesus Christ.”

Europe, Middle East and North Africa

Britain: CMS staff

Please pray for the CMS staff team as we all prepare for our third week of working from home. Pray for those now juggling extra responsibilities such as children, elderly relatives or friends and neighbours needing extra care; those who are finding lockdown lonely; those who are working harder than ever to keep everything working (for instance the IT team).

Britain: Lamentspace

At the end of last week, CMS launched an online space where people can share what they are particularly finding difficult at the moment. Please visit the page and pray through one or two of the featured posts.

Britain: pioneer teaching and open days

The Pioneer teaching team are now running modules by remote learning. Please pray for both teachers and students as they get to grips with a new learning format. Please also pray for the Oxford CMS Pioneer open days, which will be run remotely on 19 May and 15 June.
