Prayer News 03 July 2020

Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.”

John 6:35 (NIV)

Training going online

CMS-Africa’s core training has had to move online as they are unable to gather communities for training sessions in person as before. Pray for those involved as they rethink how to run training events and help people learn in the best way possible.

Uganda: short-termer returning

Janie Robson is preparing to return to Uganda after spending time in the UK due to illness. Praise God that she has now been medically cleared to go – pray for the insurance company to agree with the consultant and clear her for departure as soon as the borders are open.

Latin America

Continued increase in cases of coronavirus

Please continue to pray for the Latin America region which is currently experiencing a continuing increase in cases and deaths from COVID-19 while health systems struggle to keep up with such high numbers. Please also pray for those who are unable to earn in order to feed themselves at this moment.

Brazil: cyclone damage

A cyclone hit the southern region of Brazil on 30 June, killing nine and causing flooding and other damage. Pray for this region, including mission partners Jimmy and Katia Rocks and local partner Amanda Borges, which is now dealing with this in addition to rising numbers of COVID-19 cases.

Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil: locusts

Pray that the plague of locusts currently in Northern Argentina, having left Paraguay and appearing to be heading towards Uruguay and southern Brazil, will be brought to an end. Currently there are serious concerns around the potential huge impact on crops, livelihoods and the economy.

Chile: flooding

Mission associate Janet Mena asks for prayer for those in Santiago and other towns and cities in the centre and south of Chile which have been hit by flooding due to heavy rains.

Europe, Middle East and North Africa

UK: partnership for missional church (PMC)

COVID-19 has prompted many churches to consider how God is moving specifically in relation to this crisis and what this means for their congregations. CMS church mission enabler Frauke Eicker asks for prayer as CMS rethinks how to support churches engaging with these questions through the partnership for missional church process around the UK.

UK: gradual return to the office

Most Oxford-based staff have now been working from home for over three months. Pray for the many moving parts involved in a phased return to the office, a process which has just begun.

North Africa: delayed again

Having already spent several extra months in the UK, mission partners M and H’s return to North Africa has been delayed again this week. Please pray for them as they continue homeschooling while they wait. Pray for God’s timing for their return.

Prayer event

Please pray for CMS Asia Forum’s annual Prayer and Aware event which will be live-streamed at 10am–12noon UK time today. This year’s speakers are Suchitra Behera from the Church of Bangladesh and Rev Solomon Paul, former director of the department for youth, Church of South India Synod. Pray for the digital format to encourage many attendees from the UK and across Asia. Please register in advance with Jane Fulford: (Please note our apologies for giving the wrong email for Jane in last week’s Prayerspace.)

Nepal: dire conditions

The number of cases in Nepal is still very low, but the country is going through many problems. Many Nepali migrants are being quarantined on the Indian border, stuck in overcrowded facilities where physical distancing is impossible. Around the country, lack of food as a result of lockdown is driving some to suicide. Nepal is also experiencing a plague of locusts, which are destroying crops, and the country is presently in dispute with India over land taken by India over 50 years ago. Pray for God’s mercy on these many desperate situations. Pray for the government to be able to provide for the poorest in society who don’t have enough to eat. Pray for peace over land disputes between the governments of China, India and Nepal.

South Asia: returning to the UK

Please pray for R, scheduled to fly back to the UK today. Her flight has been changed, meaning a 19-hour layover in Doha and there are currently no hotel rooms available. Pray for God to provide accommodation so R can sleep and relax during this long wait.
