But be sure to fear the Lord and serve him faithfully with all your heart; consider what great things he has done for you.1 Samuel 12:24 (NIV)
As we approach Christmas, please pray for our people in mission. Some are stuck in the UK, unable to return to their “heart country”, others won’t be able to spend Christmas with their family due to travel restrictions and still others have not been able to have a holiday or take home leave this year. Pray for a peaceful time where all our people in mission can celebrate the reason for the season.
Europe, Middle East and North Africa
Jordan: flying home
Pray for Fiona and Joel Kelling as they plan to fly back to the UK this weekend and stay until February. Pray for a safe, easy journey as they travel with two children, and protection from COVID-19.
UK: home for Christmas
Pray for mission partners Festo and Grace Kanungha who continue to wait for a visa so Festo can join the rest of the family in Cornwall. Pray for roadblocks and red tape to be removed so the family can all be together in time for Christmas.
Uganda: new principal
As the current principal of Archbishop Janani Luwum Theological College steps down, mission partner Malcolm Pritchard asks for prayer for the right person to be found to take over the role. Pray for a new principal who is highly capable, humble, servant-hearted and who wants God’s will for every aspect of the college.
DR Congo: department heads meeting
Pray for clear communication and guidance for the department heads of the Province of the Anglican Church of Congo as they meet in Goma. Please also pray for peace in the east of the country.
Pray for God’s intervention in southern Madagascar, which is facing famine due to extreme drought. Toliara Diocese (where mission partners Derek and Jane Waller were serving until recently) is particularly affected. Pray for God’s provision for those that need food assistance, and for the Church as they do what they can to assist the communities in their distress.
Kenya: annual leave and December break
Pray for a number of CMS-Africa staff members who are on leave this December. Pray also for the all-staff December break from 18 December to 4 January to be a time of renewal and refreshment.
Bangladesh: improved power supply
Mission associate Paul Darrall, based in the UK, specialises in repairing hospital equipment for hospitals in poorer locations, especially in Africa. Pray for safety and protection from COVID-19 for Paul as he flies to LAMB Hospital in Bangladesh to fit a solar power system to provide them with a more stable power supply and enable them to provide a better standard of patient care.
Cambodia: COVID-19 spreading
This week, Cambodia saw its first community transmission of COVID-19. Schools are now closed again and it seems likely it will be very difficult to keep a lid on it this time. Pray for the country to pull together in solidarity and focus on dealing with the issue rather than playing a “blame game”.
Potential second wave of COVID-19
There have been concerning increases in cases in both Brazil and Mexico, both countries led by presidents who have taken a much less stringent attitude to controlling the spread of the virus. It is possible a second wave may sweep across the region soon. Pray for people to take sensible precautions to stop the spread of the virus.
Honduras: aftermath of Hurricane Iota and Storm Eta
Pray for Honduras, which is struggling to deal with the effects of the two recent storms which caused flooding and landslides across the country. Many have been displaced and there are reports of increases in the spread of COVID-19 and dengue fever. Do remember and pray for mission partner Steve Poulson based in Tegucigalpa and particularly the children and young people he serves.
Guatemala: keeping children in education
Schools in Guatemala are likely to remain physically closed due to the pandemic well into 2021. Please pray for Street Kids Direct as they work hard with supported projects to keep children in education.
