Prayer News 06 September 2019

“Then Jesus came to them and said, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age’.” Matthew 28:18–20 (NIV)

South Sudan: Prayer for the nation

We want to pray each week for a specific country where CMS people in mission work. This week, please spend time praying for the troubled nation of South Sudan and for our people in mission based there: mission partner Lynn Trenerary and local partners Sam Malish, Joseph Noel Sati and Paul and Regina Lueth.

Formed in 2011, South Sudan is the newest nation in Africa. However, a political dispute between President Kiir and Vice President Riek Machar led to a civil war in 2013 and, despite attempted peace talks, the country continues to be divided by war.

Lynn writes asking for prayer for the peace process and for food shortages: “We seem to swing from a fragile hope to loss of all hope. Fighting has intensified in Yei State and Adar, up in the North East. The combatants are a mix of rebels, government army, the opposition army and armed civilians and the consequences have been felt across the whole country with the disintegration of infrastructure, etc.

“Nearly everyone here is food insecure so please pray for this situation. The inflation rate has also fallen considerably from 400 per cent to 25 per cent but the fall-out from the civil war means that wages are a drop in the ocean compared to rising costs such as medicines which are now unaffordable.”

Kenya: Rev Joe Orlale

Please pray for the family of Rev Joe Orlale, CMS-Africa Champion and trainer on holistic community transformation, who was killed following a family dispute. Please especially pray for Rev Joe’s wife and two children as they come to terms with what happened.

Joe was one of the earliest trainers to be discipled in the CMS-Africa flagship programme Samaritan Strategy. Joe led campaigns to enhance cotton farming, conducted Samaritan strategy trainings, mentored new trainers and served the community through his own initiatives under the umbrella of Ebenezer ministries. He will be remembered for his devotion to training in the western Kenya region but also across the borders in Uganda, Tanzania and South Sudan.

Latin America

Peru: Anna Sims

Anna is a mission partner working as part of Walking in Liberty, a prison ministry supporting English-speaking female foreign inmates and ex-offenders in Lima. She writes for prayer for:

  • “The prison ministry, as I take on more responsibility.
  • Conversations with a local Peruvian church which is interested in setting up a ministry for foreign Spanish-speaking prisoners.
  • Me, as I settle back into life in Lima after time spent back in the UK.”

Europe, the Middle East and North Africa

North Africa: Prayer for two mission partners

Please pray for two mission partners working in a mountainous region in North Africa. Pray especially for their good health, to be salt and light in all that they do, for the ongoing training and courses that they are running and for the right people to come alongside them in their work.

Lebanon: Phil and Sylvie Good

Please pray for mission partners Phil and Sylvie Good who are working with local churches in Beirut helping them to manage their resources.

Phil writes: “As in all urban environments the church must stand out and shout for justice and peace in an unjust and divided world. Here in Beirut it is no different and it struggles to connect with the next generation, seemingly out of touch with what concerns them. Yet the alternative does not work either, having a new, modern, Facebook-friendly image but losing touch with its history and roots, creating another division. Please pray for unity between the different generations and imaginative and creative ways to reach across this divide. I am currently working on building a coffee shop within the church to try and create a space that will help bridge the gap. Pray for a partner to help fund the setup and a manager to run it.”

South East Asia: Prayer for two mission partners

Please pray for two mission partners, A and L, who we can’t name for security reasons. They write:

“This past month has definitely been about getting down to business. L has been finding her feet in her new role at work and has hopefully managed to negotiate a time to do SEN (special educational needs) work. Please pray about this moving forward; we know God has been working and it really feels that he is moving L towards doing more SEN work.

“However, the past few weeks have also sadly felt like we are under attack, and our first thoughts were ‘are we really meant to be here’. However, we then thought about it more and figured that ‘it’s because we ARE meant to be here!’ We’ve never felt more purpose for being here as we do now. Please pray with us, that we become more rooted and that we will be protected spiritually.”
