Prayer News 06 November 2020

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.

Hebrews 13:8 (NIV)

Europe, Middle East and North Africa

Greece, Turkey: earthquake

Pray for the people of Greece and Turkey as they deal with the aftermath of last week’s earthquake. Pray for the healthcare workers caring for hundreds of injured people, and comfort and strength for the many who have lost loved ones, homes and their sense of safety.

Middle East: COVID-19

A mission partner couple report that the COVID situation in their location is not good at all. Pray for peace and against violence as the likelihood of conflict between different groups increases. Praise God that Bible translation continues to move forward.

Lebanon: new school

Praise God for the good news from mission partners Philip and Sylvie Good that funds have been raised and the new school for refugee children is being built to a high standard. Pray for the refugee kids as the weather gets colder; many families are living in tents.

Cornwall: home for Christmas

Pray for mission partners Festo and Grace Kanungha who continue to wait for a visa so Festo can join the rest of the family in Cornwall. Pray for roadblocks and red tape to be removed so the family can all be together in plenty of time for Christmas.

Africa

Africa conference

Regional manager Steve Burgess asks for prayer for this weekend’s online Africa conference. Pray for CMS international mission director Paul Thaxter as he leads the Bible study on the theme “Discipleship in changing times” from Mark’s gospel. Pray for good internet connections, for the conference to run smoothly and for participants to feel connected despite not being together in person.

Uganda: back in the UK

Praise God that mission partner Malcolm Pritchard has safely arrived in the UK. Pray for Malcolm as he spends time in quarantine and goes into lockdown in the UK. Please also pray for Archbishop Janani Luwum Theological College, which has no power at the moment due to a fire on the overhead cables.

Malawi: prayer groups

Praise God for mission associates Melita and Stephen Gordon’s recent good trip to the UK. Praise God for new prayer groups which have been started at the hospital in Blantyre where the Gordons serve. Pray for COVID-19 numbers to remain low in Malawi.

Latin America

Paraguay: La Herencia and Bible translation

While much of the Chaco remains open and only lightly impacted by COVID-19, mission partner Tim Curtis asks for prayer for the indigenous communities of La Herencia which are currently badly hit by the virus. Pray too for Tim as he serves as a consultant on the revision of the Northern Enhlet translation of the Bible, having previously translated the Bible to Southern Enxet. The size of the task is becoming clear to the translators so please pray for them and for Tim as he serves the translation team.

Argentina: fighting gender-based violence

AMARE, the local expression of Mothers’ Union in Argentina, whose leadership includes mission partners Catherine Le Tissier and Shelley Stokes, is currently working on a campaign against gender-based violence. Pray that this will bring about a change in society and pray particularly for Mariana who will be speaking at a webinar on the subject this week, seeking to raise awareness of the issue.

Guatemala, Honduras: children’s education on the line

Mission partners Mark and Rosalie Balfour and Steve Poulson ask for prayer for children in Guatemala and Honduras, whose education is up in the air, and some of whom may not be motivated to return to school even when they can. Schools have remained physically shut throughout the pandemic and it is uncertain when they will be able to open again. Schools have been trying to help children keep up through homework via WhatsApp, but this is no use to the many families who don’t have Wi-Fi or access to a smartphone. Pray for Mark and Rosalie, Steve and everyone at Street Kids Direct as they consider short, medium and long-term options.

Brazil: COVID-19

Short-termers Evaldo and Rebecca Reid Rodrigues ask for prayer for Brazil. The number of cases has continued to fall, but there have already been over 150,000 deaths due to COVID and some people are behaving as if the virus has gone. Pray for people to be sensible and work to stop the spread of the virus. Pray for those whose livelihoods have been affected due to the lockdown and those in poorer communities who are particularly vulnerable at this time to the illness and the aftermath.

Asia

India: news from E and R

Mission partners E and R write that E’s Greek lessons over Zoom are going well, and that R has recently become a trustee of Women Learning Together, a group which works with Indian diaspora in the UK. Pray for E and R as they continue to look after her father alongside their work.

Nepal: effects of COVID-19

Pray for the families, loved ones and colleagues of two Kathmandu International Study Centre (KISC) staff members who recently died of COVID-19. Pray for God to comfort them in their grief.
Pray for local partners Dr Saggu and Esther Abraham as they embark on a complicated, and potentially stressful, journey from Nepal to India to be with family.

Sri Lanka: local partners

Our local partners in Sri Lanka are going through a challenging time and ask for prayer specifically for God’s protection. Pray for protection from COVID-19 and safety in the face of anything that would come against them.
