Prayer News 1 March 2019

Jesus replied: “Truly I tell you, if you have faith and do not doubt, not only can you do what was done to the fig tree, but also you can say to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea’, and it will be done.” Matthew 21:21 (NIV)

India: Prayer for the nation

We want to pray each week for a specific country where CMS people in mission work. This week, please pray for three mission partner couples (who cannot be named for security reasons) serving in India and local partners Shirish Suresh Suryawanshi and Hemkhomang Haokip. Hate crimes against Christians were at an all-time-high in 2018, and attempts at religious polarisation are currently mounting in the lead-up to general elections in April–May. Pray for God to intervene in the hearts and minds of those at the centre of this.

Pray also for this country with so much human need and for God to bring hope to those trapped in oppression, poverty, and disease.

Pakistan and India: Tensions rising

You may well be aware of the present increase in tension between Pakistan and India. This is a serious situation with the potential to deteriorate. Recent leaders from both sides have said that they don’t want the situation to escalate, which is encouraging. Please pray that the situation will not escalate and that peace will reign between these neighbour nations as soon as possible.

South East Asia: Moving house

Pray for two mission partners in South East Asia and their children who are moving house this week. Pray that they will get the necessary help for the move and that it will go smoothly. Pray also that they will settle in well and be able to enjoy their new home and community.

Britain: Interviews with prospective students

Mission partner Andrea Campanale and Tina Hodgett, Evangelism and Pioneer Team Leader for the Diocese of Bath and Wells, have been interviewing 15 prospective students this past week for the new pioneer training hub starting in Bath and Wells Diocese in May. Pray for God to guide them clearly as they decide which students to select.

Britain: CMS Southern Conference

Office staff members Colin Smith, Marcio Ciechanovicz and Andrea Campanale will be speaking at the CMS Southern Conference from today until Sunday (1–3 March) on the theme of pioneering mission. Pray for each one of them as they seek to communicate clearly and inspire conference participants.

Britain: Conversations Day

The CMS pioneer team are delighted that the conversations day is sold out! Please pray for all the team on Monday (4 March) and for the keynote speakers, workshop leaders and panel members. Please also pray for all who will attend on the day and that it will be an encouragement to the wider church in its shared mission. Pray for those working with pioneers in the UK and around the world, that they are able to share the good news of Jesus in new and innovative ways.

Latin America

Brazil: The Alpha Course and 200 year celebrations

Mission partners Jess and Mark Simpson and Alex and Jane Cacouris are gearing up to kick-start both the Alpha Course and the 200 year celebrations of Christ Church, Rio, the church where they work. Pray that the celebration would help to increase their outreach to English speakers of all nations. Please also pray for safety – Jess has had two close encounters with muggers in the past month. Thankfully no harm was inflicted and nothing was stolen.

Venezuela: ongoing crisis

Venezuela is still in the throes of a crisis, with two different leaders claiming to be president and the country divided. Leaders, including US Vice President Mike Pence are meeting on Monday to discuss the crisis, and President Trump is considering military action. Pray for God’s miraculous intervention.

Latin America: Exploring disability missiology

Mission partners Pat Blanchard (Peru) and Sharon Wilcox (Ecuador) are travelling to Oxford for OMF’s March conference Beyond the Boundaries exploring disability missiology. Pray that people would come to the conference ready to learn, and be able to share their own learning.

CMS Africa: Strategic ministry

Give thanks for CMS Africa and their ministry of equipping and multiplying leaders to bring about transformed communities. In the past week, CMS and CMS Africa have been considering how to align our ministry in Africa in support of current strategies. Give thanks for very fruitful discussions. CMS Africa are developing a new five-year strategy (2020 to 2025). Pray for this process led by Canon Moses Bushendich and the staff.

CMS and CMS Africa: Joint conference in October

Pray also for the planning of a joint CMS and CMS Africa people in mission conference in October this year and for wisdom and discernment.

Nigeria: Political tensions

Please pray for Nigeria as there are tensions after the presidential election last Saturday. Pray for God to calm this situation. Pray also for the elections for state governors in just over a week’s time, that God would put the most suitable people in office and for his will to be accomplished for this nation.

South Africa: Academic reading and writing course

Mission partners Caroline and Dick Seed ask for prayer for PhD candidates from the Nigeria hub who are coming to George Whitefield College in Cape Town. They are there for six weeks from 25 February for a course in academic reading and writing led by Caroline and for training in teaching and learning led by Dick. Pray for clear learning, understanding and fellowship.
