Pause with Scripture
Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.Proverbs 19:21 (NIV)
Nepal: monsoon destruction
Pray for the people of Nepal, where monsoon rains have continued to cause floods and landslides in many districts. At least 14 people have lost their lives, and blocked roads are causing widespread disruption. Please pray for the greatest needs of the most vulnerable Nepalis to be quickly met in the aftermath of this year’s monsoon destruction, and for wisdom about the role our partners can play in that.
Nepal: trying to return
Mission partners Andrea and Andrew Young have been doing pastoral care from the UK for over a year and are now trying to get visas to return to Nepal. Pray for their visas to come through so they can return as soon as possible and resume in-person pastoral care.
Kenya: training for young people
Local partner Salvator Nkorerimana asks for prayer for training taking place over the next two months which aims to help young people develop and use their skills. Pray for young people to engage with the training and be encouraged to make the most of what God has given them.
South Sudan: 115 new evangelists in Maridi diocese
Give thanks that Bishop Moses has commissioned 115 new evangelists for the diocese and pray for their ministry to be fruitful. Pray also for the young people of the diocese, who play a vital role in evangelism in the parishes. Pray for the upcoming youth conference in October, for young people to meet with Jesus.
South Sudan: flooding and famine
Unprecedented flooding in many parts of South Sudan, combined with the effects of widespread conflict and violence and the economic effects of COVID-19, have resulted in 60 per cent of the country’s population being assessed as hungry. The World Food Programme (WFP) assesses the food security situation this year as the worst ever. Pray for all at risk of starvation and unable to feed their families; and for WFP and all agencies striving to bring help to those in need.
Argentina: finishing service
Mission partners David and Shelley Stokes are completing their service with CMS this month, making their final link church visits and speaking at the Adelante conference. Please pray for them as they transition into retirement and for God’s leading for them in this new stage of life.
Paraguay: meeting again
Praise God that the congregation that mission partner Bev Richardson leads in Asuncion was able to meet face-to-face last Sunday and celebrate several confirmations too. This weekend, Nico, a member of her congregation, will be ordained deacon. Pray for him and for a special service that Bev is helping to prepare to which pastors of other local churches have been invited.
Europe, Middle East and North Africa
Iran: Christians detained
Iranian Christians request prayer for three Christian converts who were arrested at a prayer meeting in Rasht on 5 September and transferred to an unknown location. Please pray for God to strengthen and encourage Morteza, Ayoub and Ahmad and give them wisdom to answer their interrogators, for their friends and families to know God’s peace despite the current situation, and for the Iranian authorities to stop the persecution of Christian converts and other religious minorities for the peaceful expression of their faith. (This prayer request comes from Middle East Concern.)
Lebanon: ongoing fuel crisis
Mission partners Audrey and Colin Gibson write that electricity is increasingly in short supply as neither the main (oil-fired) power stations nor the private (diesel-operated – and expensive) backup generators can provide electricity 24 hours a day. Some businesses have closed as a result and even the most prestigious hospital in Lebanon came within a day of having to shut – a private donation of fuel solved the short-term problem. The price of petrol has risen sixfold over the past few months, and, when it is available, motorists have to queue for hours. Please pray for the people of Lebanon as they deal with the effects of this crisis and for wisdom for decision-makers during this very difficult time.
