Brazil and Mexico: coronavirus spreading
While many countries across Latin America continue to enjoy much lower COVID-19 numbers, Brazil and Mexico continue to show an upwards trend and a potential second wave of infections and deaths. In Brazil, hopes that previous high levels of the virus might reduce the chances of such a rise have now been dashed. Pray for people in these countries to be able to take sensible precautions while still earning money.
Chile, Paraguay, Uruguay: potential second wave of the virus
Chile and Paraguay have tightened restrictions in response to a rise in cases, with Chile particularly understood to be seeking to avoid a potential second wave. Uruguay, which had maintained very low levels of the virus for a long period of time appears to now be experiencing a sharp rise in cases too. Pray for protection from the virus and for people to be able to earn a living while keeping safe.
Paraguay and Uruguay: diocesan synods
Pray for diocesan synods taking place in both Paraguay and Uruguay this weekend. Mission partners Bev Richardson and Tim Curtis will both be involved in the synod in Paraguay. Do pray for a clear sense of the Holy Spirit’s leading and for unity in the discussions as to whether to approve the selected candidate to become the new Anglican Bishop of Paraguay. Pray too for local partner Mechi Tarragona and husband Bishop Daniel Genovesi as they take part in the synod in the Diocese of Uruguay and for the decisions that will be made there.
Ethiopia: peace in Tigray
CMS-Africa request prayer for the Tigray Region, where tension has led to conflict between government forces and residents of the region, which could escalate to civil war. Pray for God’s peace throughout the region, and for his Church especially to be bringers of peace.
Uganda: peaceful election
Pray for the political situation in Uganda, for peace to prevail throughout the country in the lead-up to the general election on 14 January. Pray for a peaceful election and for people to observe the COVID-19 health and safety guidelines as they conduct political campaigns.
Uganda: language learning
Mission partners Neil and Sue Browning have been in Moyo since the beginning of October. Pray for them as they settle into the community and learn the language. Pray for Neil, working as a general surgeon at Moyo General Hospital and facing the challenges of a lack of basic equipment and medication.
Kenya: annual leave and December break
Pray for a number of CMS-Africa staff members who are on leave this December. Pray also for the all-staff December break from 18 December to 4 January to be a time of renewal and refreshment.
Europe, Middle East and North Africa
