Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. Philippians 4:6 (NIV)
Please pray not only against coronavirus, but also against the fear of coronavirus. Praise God that he is bigger than coronavirus, and that nothing can separate us from his love (Romans 8:38). Pray for God’s perfect love to cast out fear among Christians especially, and for God’s love and peace to shine even brighter during this difficult time.
Europe, Middle East and North Africa
Jordan: prayer for the nation
Jordan (population 10 million) has closed its borders in a bid to keep residents safe from coronavirus. So far, Jordan has recorded only one case of the virus, while neighbouring Israel and Palestine have documented close to 100 cases between them. Pray for God’s continued protection from the virus. Pray for Jordan’s current religious freedom to continue, and for everyone who seeks Jesus to find him. Pray for our mission partners Fiona and Joel Kelling, working to support and strengthen the diverse Christian communities of the Middle East from their base in Amman.
Britain: Partnership for Missional Church (PMC)
Several churches involved in the PMC process in Oxford diocese gathered last weekend to share what God is doing through PMC and were greatly encouraged at seeing God open doors and bring people ready and excited to partner with churches. This weekend, a number of churches from Durham diocese are gathering. These churches have in the past 12 months taken a closer look at where their churches are located and what kind of needs the people around them face, and are now at a point of prayerfully discerning which needs God may be asking them to meet, and which outside partners they may be able to link with. Pray for this weekend to generate confidence in participants as they practise holding conversations. Pray that they get a growing sense of God being at work in their midst and a sense of excitement as they get more involved.
China: church lockdown
Please pray for Chinese churches that are not able to meet due to coronavirus. Seminaries are not in session; trains are not running; flights are cancelled; roads and public spaces are uncharacteristically empty of people; many are living in some anxiety at home and are uncertain about what happens next. To overcome the profound isolation this has caused, several registered churches share in worship digitally. Please hold the Chinese Church up in prayer.
DR Congo: violence and unrest
CMS-Africa ask for prayer for the situation in eastern Congo, and Congo in general, which is experiencing terrible violence in some places. On 1 March, more than 30 people – mostly women and children – were killed at Mungwalu. Pray for peace and stability in DRC. Pray for the planned seminar from 16–22 March in Bunia at our Peace Centre. Pray for the delegates from Kindu, Boga, Bukavu, Butembo, Beni, Kisangani, Aru and Kamango, and for the 10 delegates from four camps for the displaced here in Bunia.
Sudan: new projects
Pray for peace in Sudan as the country navigates the formation of a stable political leadership. Pray for lasting peace, and against works of wickedness. Pray for local partner James Hassan’s projects in the communities where he is trusting God to open the door for the building of a kindergarten in Peace School; the building of a cathedral wall; and organising gospel outreach in new areas. Pray for the Diocese of Kadugli and the servants of God ministering in various regions.
Ecuador: training volunteers
Pray for Sharon Wilcox who will be training volunteers to teach life skills to adults with learning disabilities. She is travelling to Quito from 17 to 22 March to do this with the hope that the churches represented among the volunteers will begin projects like the one Sharon leads in Santo Domingo. Do pray for Sharon, for those attending and for the people they will serve through their churches.
