Prayer News 14 January 2022

Pause with Scripture

See, the former things have taken place, and new things I declare; before they spring into being I announce them to you.

Isaiah 42:9 (NIV)

Latin America

COVID-19

As Omicron spreads rapidly across Latin America, many countries in the region are seeing record numbers of cases. A number of CMS people in mission are currently unwell with the virus, so please pray for a quick recovery for all of them and for the region as it wrestles with this latest stage of the pandemic.

Brazil: flooding and landslides

Heavy rains across parts of Brazil have led to flooding and landslides as well as the collapse of a number of mining dams. A number of people have been killed and hundreds of thousands affected by the flood waters. Please pray for support for those impacted by the flooding, particularly those who have lost loved ones, homes or livelihoods as a result.

Haiti: hostages safe and well

Just before Christmas, the remaining 15 US and Canadian missionary hostages being held by a gang in Haiti managed to escape and are all safe and well. Praise God for their escape and safe return home.

Africa

Ethiopia: back in Addis

Having spent a few weeks with friends in Zimbabwe over Christmas and New Year for security reasons, mission partners Chris and Suzy Wilson have now returned to Addis Ababa. Pray for a straightforward process around getting their residency IDs, for them to quickly learn Amharic and discern how to support church leaders across the country. Pray, too, for them to be able to make a return visit to Gambella.

South Sudan/Sudan: villagers attacked on border

Recently an armed band of Misseriya tribesmen on horseback crossed the border from Sudan and attacked two villages in Wau province, leaving at least 28 people dead as well as destroying homes, granaries and churches. Pray for all those injured, bereaved or made homeless in the attack.

Europe, Middle East and North Africa

Libya: anti-Christian actions by authorities

Christians in Libya request prayer as they face anti-Christian actions on the part of the authorities. Across the country, a campaign was launched to confiscate Christmas decorations, and some shops selling such items were closed by police. Some Christians were arrested on New Year’s Eve, as the authorities believed they were celebrating Christmas. Please pray for Christians, and converts from Islam especially, for protection against the continued attempts of the authorities to harass them. This prayer request comes from Middle East Concern.

Asia

Afghanistan: humanitarian crisis

The start of a harsh winter is accelerating Afghanistan’s humanitarian crisis. Since the Taliban’s seizure of power, and international sanctions, the economy has gone into freefall. The collapse of the previous Afghan government and the withdrawal of Western support have led to soaring unemployment. Few can afford to feed their families or heat their homes. One million children are at risk of severe malnourishment. The United Nations has now issued an urgent call for aid for the country. Pray for God to move and meet people during this difficult time, for countries to respond to the urgent call for aid and for relief from this impossible situation.

Thailand: visas

Please pray as CMS seeks a placement in Thailand for a mission partner couple. Pray for God to open the right doors in his time, including providing the visas they need in order to work there.

Nepal: Dan and Phillipa Munday

Mission associates Dan and Phillipa give thanks for travelling safety on some terrible roads, for good health, a beautiful place to live and unexpected opportunities to extend love to their community. Pray for wisdom and stamina as they continue to work out their new roles, for the appointment of key staff and forward planning for the projects they are working on in palliative care and teacher training, while the country faces the Omicron wave.

South Asia: preparing to return

Pray for mission partner F as she prepares to return to South Asia in one month’s time; for her remaining link visits to go well, and as she prepares for a full work schedule on her return, particularly for a programme in creation care as part of her students’ MA programme.
