Prayer news 14 May 2021

“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.”

Matthew 5:14 (NIV)

Asia

South Asia: teaching online

Pray for mission partner F as she teaches online due to her location being in lockdown. Pray that technology will work and that she will be able to engage the 22 students taking part in the course.

South Asia: comfort

Pray for mission associate N as his friend and prayer partner of 35 years has passed away. Pray that N will find God’s comfort and love during this difficult time.

Philippines: creation care and snacks

Pray for Eric and Sandra Read as they have started to promote creation care alongside serving simple food on their farm as more people are fleeing to the countryside for day trips. Give thanks for this opportunity and pray that they will be able to provide some simple snacks but more importantly teach and inspire people about creation care. Please also pray for their daughter Atiyyah as she is in the UK and has not seen her parents since Christmas 2019.

Latin America

Ecuador: dengue fever and COVID-19

Following an outbreak of dengue fever in Santo Domingo, Ecuador, houses are being fumigated in hopes of stopping the spread by lessening numbers of mosquitoes. Pray for the outbreak to be brought under control. Ecuador has now acquired enough doses of COVID-19 vaccines for everyone to have two doses. Pray for the vaccines to be administered efficiently and to stop COVID-19 in its tracks.

Chile: elections

This weekend will see 155 people elected to help formulate the country’s new constitution. There are 44 evangelicals standing, including a man called Tomas from mission partners’ Alf and Hilary Cooper’s church. At the same time, elections are also taking place for mayors, councillors and governors. Pray for God’s will to be done in all these elections.

Costa Rica: master’s for pastors

Andy Miller (NZCMS) is helping to run an online master’s course in Costa Rica, which has seen twice as many participants over the past year. There is now growing interest around mobilising whole churches for mission. Pray for Andy and his colleagues as they talk with a church about the possibility of using the course to train the church’s 23 pastors.

Europe, Middle East and North Africa

Israel: peace

Please pray for peace in Israel and an end to the current unrest and conflict. Pray especially that the threat to evict Israeli Arabs from their homes in East Jerusalem and move Israeli settlers in will be halted. Pray for all those who are engaged in the long hard work of reconciliation between the different communities.

Israel: beginning ministry in Jaffa

Pray for Jen and Kevin Cable as they move to Israel to begin their ministry at St Peter’s Church, Jaffa, hoping to open the church again after decades of closure and start a ministry to seafarers at Jaffa port. As their latest flights have been cancelled and Ben Gurion Airport has been closed, pray for the airport to reopen and for flights to be re-arranged so that Jen and Kevin can fly to Israel by Wednesday next week.

Britain: visa at last!

We give thanks to God that Festo Kanungha has at last been granted a spouse visa to come to the UK. Pray for him, Grace and the children as they hope to be reunited later this month and re-establish themselves as a family. Pray for Festo as he begins to serve alongside Grace in Cornwall.

Lebanon: on the move

Pray for Nabil and Sarah Shehadi, who have been based in Cyprus for a time and are now moving back to Lebanon for a period. Pray for Nabil’s continuing work of setting up, coordinating and running Alpha courses in Lebanon and Syria.

Africa

Rwanda: ongoing training programmes

Local partner Josias Nkusi asks for prayer for men and women currently on the Financial Freedom for Families (F4) course due to conclude at the end of the month. Pray for each participant to be equipped to be good stewards of their resources. Pray also for Josias and others as they train 40 young people using the Discover, Develop, Deploy (3D) programme this quarter. Pray for God to work in each of these young people’s lives.

Rwanda: returning to the UK

Mission partners Catriona and Stephen Bennett ask for prayer as they seek God’s timing for their return to Scotland. Originally planning to finish their placement in Gahini this month, Catriona and Stephen refuse to subject their lively children to hotel quarantine. Pray for God to show them a way through so their daughter Hannah can start school in August in Scotland.

Uganda: improvements at Moyo General Hospital

Mission partners Neil and Sue Browning have been hoping to set up an orthopaedic surgery service at the hospital, because hip and femur fractures are common and poorly treated. Neil and Sue write that their daughters have helped raise enough money to do this and that this will now go ahead. Praise God for his provision and pray for the orthopaedic service to be a blessing to many.
