Prayer News 16 April 2021

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.

1 Peter 1:3

Latin America

Argentina: primate of the Province of South America

Please pray for Nick Drayson, recently chosen as primate of the Province of South America in addition to his role as bishop of Northern Argentina. Pray for him as he takes on additional responsibilities and leads the province into the future.

Ecuador and Peru: recent elections

Praise God for peaceful elections in both Ecuador and Peru last weekend. Pray for Ecuador’s new President Guillermo Lasso and for God’s leading for Peru’s electorate as they choose between Pedro Castillo and Keiko Fujimori, two presidential candidates at opposite ends of the political spectrum, in a second-round run-off on 6 June.

Bolivia: new ministry

A new ministry with street kids in Santa Cruz is being led by a couple mentored and discipled through mission partner Andrew Peart’s microfinance scheme. Pray for the couple, who used to be on the streets themselves, leading the outreach work and for those children and young people to whom they are ministering.

Paraguay: COVID-19

Mission partner Tim Curtis asks for prayer for Paraguay, which is struggling through peak COVID-19 figures, and the Brazilian variant is now circulating in the country. Please pray for the safety of the Anglican Centre in Rio Verde, where Tim is living alone at present, and for continued wisdom in relating to the Énxet and other indigenous churches during the pandemic.

Europe, Middle East and North Africa

Spain/North Africa: Egypt trip

A couple serving in Spain and North Africa ask for prayer as the husband travels to Egypt for two weeks to encourage believers and other missionaries. Pray for his safety and health during this time and for him to be able to accomplish all that God has determined for him during this trip.

Lebanon: Alpha

Nabil and Sarah Shehadi ask for continued prayer for Alpha and the work happening in the EMENA region. Praise God that the Alpha videos have been dubbed into Farsi; pray for God to use this tool to bring many people to faith. Pray for a quick recovery for Sarah, who has a bone fracture.

North Africa: believers fasting for Ramadan

Mission partners M and H ask for prayer for a couple who are believers but who are still fasting for Ramadan. Pray also for M and H’s language teacher, who has become more open to the gospel.

Africa

South Sudan: hunger and malnutrition

Pray for the 700,000 refugees and displaced people who will now be given 50 per cent less food as the World Food Programme redirects resources towards others in even greater need. Pray for the many people who rely on others for their food and are currently facing malnutrition, anaemia and stunted growth.

Tanzania: wisdom for the president

Mission partners Ben and Katy Ray ask for prayer for Samia Hassan, the first female president of Tanzania, for great wisdom and discernment as she leads the country through this difficult time. Please pray for Ben and Katy as they consider plans for furlough this summer, including the logistics around the UK requiring an expensive quarantine. Pray for good alternatives to meeting in person to be found where necessary, such as meeting with churches via Zoom.

Uganda: one year in

Mission partners Tom and Verity Clare are grateful to God for all their supporters who have helped them during their first year in country. Their four sons are now settled with good friends in the expat community and growing relationships with some of the local kids too. Pray for Tom, who took on the role of diocesan health coordinator at the beginning of April, for wisdom as he looks to oversee the initiation of community health insurance in the lower-level health facilities.

Asia

South Asia: theology conference next week

Mission partner F asks for prayer for a theology conference for seminary and Bible college students taking place next week. Pray for the teaching to have a positive impact on the lives of many potential church leaders, equipping participants to effect transformation in their individual contexts. Pray especially that the COVID-19 situation and unrest in the country does not hinder people from attending this conference and for all the facilitators, speakers and organisers to be led by the Holy Spirit. Please also pray for F’s visa to be granted.

South Asia: admitted to hospital

Please pray for a friend of mission partners B and K, who recently caught COVID-19 and was admitted to hospital. Praise God that an ICU bed was available for this person and pray for a quick recovery.

South Asia: COVID-19

Mission partners E and R write that they are in the midst of a new wave of COVID-19. Pray for wisdom for church leadership in how to manage the recent surge in COVID-19 cases. Pray for E, who has two course deadlines coming up.
