Prayer News 16 October 2020

When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them?

Psalm 8:3–4 (NIV)

Bolivia: general elections

Pray for peace, stability and justice as Bolivia holds elections for president and congress this Sunday, 18 October in the midst of uncertainty and tension. Last year’s fraudulent elections unleashed a socio-political hurricane that overthrew the then-President Evo Morales and his cabinet. This year, the collapse of the healthcare system as a result of COVID-19, the breakdown of the economy and recent Amazonian fires have brought the situation to boiling point. Pray for reason and calm to prevail and for everyone to accept the election results. Pray against violent protests and blockades in the wake of this year’s election results.

Ecuador: schools reopening

Mission partner Sharon Wilcox reports that Ecuador is trialling a return to school by opening a few schools. Pray for this pilot project to present opportunities to iron out any issues, and prepare school staff for a country-wide return.

Paraguay: rain

Mission partner Bev Richardson asks for continued prayer for rain in Paraguay. Pray for enough rain to fill the waterways, but not so much that it causes flooding. Pray too as St Andrew’s College and Chapel reopen using a hybrid (digital and face-to-face) approach, that this would help as many people as possible.

Brazil: children unable to return to school

Mission partners Daniel and Sarah Brito Medeiros report that in Brazil, children are still unable to return to school, even though gatherings of up to 1000 people are now allowed. Please pray for Daniel and Sarah’s daughters, Sophie and Ana, who have been studying online for over seven months now, for all the children like them, and for yet more children who have no access to their studies due to lack of provision, lack of internet or both.

Asia

Philippines: Jigsaw Ministries

Please pray for protection for Jigsaw staff from COVID-19 as they offer practical help in several communities despite increased COVID numbers. Please pray for God’s blessing on their work among vulnerable children and families and for the good news and love of Jesus to be spread across the hundreds of urban homes and households.

Cambodia: extreme rainfall

Pray for the hundreds of families in Cambodia and Vietnam who have been affected by extreme tropical rainfall across the Mekong region.

South Asia: visit to the UK

Please pray for E and R in South Asia, coordinating the staff team of their church, and teaching theology and coordinating the church’s teaching respectively. Praise God for R’s good visit to the UK and that their children K and S have settled well into university.

Nepal: moving to Nepal

Pray for mission associates Craig and Elaine as they prepare to move to Nepal. Pray for God’s peace, and for God’s hand on all the practical arrangements that need to be put in place.

Pakistan: staff retreat, visa

Mission partner F, working to provide theological education in Pakistan, is grateful to God for a really good and productive staff retreat which included strategic planning. Pray for wisdom for F and for the cooperation of relevant departments as she applies for her visa renewal.

Middle East and North Africa

Iran: internal exile

Friends of Christian convert Mohammad Reza (Youhan) Omidi request prayer as he serves a term of internal exile in Borazjan, in the south of Iran. Youhan was arrested in May 2016 and sentenced to ten years in prison for “acting against the national security through propagating house churches and promoting Zionist Christianity.” He was also sentenced to two years of exile.
Youhan’s prison sentence was later reduced to 24 months and he was released in August. Having now begun his term in exile, Youhan is looking for a place to rent. Once he has found an apartment, his wife, Maryam, and daughters Sara and Sandra will join him.
Iranian Christians ask for prayer for Youhan and his family: for suitable accommodation, for the family to quickly adjust to this new situation, and for God to turn this time in exile into an opportunity for rich blessing for Youhan and his family. (From Middle East Concern.)

Africa

Tanzania: returning to Mara

Mission partner Heather Johnstone writes that as of 1 October, international commercial travel recommenced in South Africa for the first time since March. Praise God that Heather is now able to return to Mara and the Rehema Project when she is ready. Pray for God’s hand on all the practicalities, and safety for when she travels in a few weeks’ time.

Tanzania: Neema Crafts

Mission partners Ben and Katy Ray ask for prayer for the safe arrival of Chloe and Joe Chettleburgh, planning to join the Neema team for at least a year from November. Praise God that not a single Neema staff member has suffered severely from COVID-19, even though there are very few measures in place in Tanzania to prevent spread of the virus.

DR Congo: settling into French school

After a long delay due to COVID-19, Anthea and Martin Gordon and their children arrived in Goma earlier this month where Martin is taking on the role of vicar general of the Diocese of Goma and Anthea is working with Tearfund to reach the poorest communities in eastern Congo. Pray for the children as they settle into schooling in French; pray for them to make friends and learn French quickly.
