Prayer News 20 November 2020

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.

Romans 8:28 (NIV)

Latin America

Central America: Hurricane Iota

Following the massive impact of Storm Eta last week, Central America has been hit by Hurricane Iota’s strong winds and heavy rainfall. Pray for those who have lost loved ones and all who have been displaced by flooding and landslides. Pray also for CMS mission partners in Guatemala (Mark and Rosalie Balfour, Azaria Spencer) and Honduras (Steve Poulson).

Peru: three presidents within a week

Pray for stability in Peru. After President Vizcarra’s impeachment, deeply unpopular interim President Merino was forced to resign after six days following mass protests and the death of two protestors. Pray for new interim president Francisco Sagasti, for peace and stability in the country and for CMS’s people in mission in Peru: David Gonzales, Anderson Sanchez, Pat Blanchard, Paul and Sarah Tester and Anna Sims.

Argentina: travelling to indigenous communities

Pray for mission partners David and Shelley Stokes as they travel to Potrillo to visit the indigenous communities there. This will be a chance to begin goodbyes as they move towards a return to the UK early next year. Pray for good health and safety and the opportunity for good farewells.

Tanzania: general elections in October

Thank God for recently held general elections in Tanzania where the incumbent president John Magufuli won a second term. The main opposition leader Tundu Lissu has contested the election outcome. Pray for peace to prevail after an intense election period. Pray for President Magufuli to lead the nation with justice and in ways that bring glory and honour to God.

DR Congo: in need of God’s comfort

Local partner Bisoke Balikenga asks for prayer for one of the women who has sought refuge at his peace centre in Bunia. Alice (not her real name) is traumatised after eight of her nine children were killed by armed rebels and her only remaining child was kidnapped. Pray for God’s comfort for Alice during this incredibly dark time, and pray for her remaining child to be found alive and well.

Malawi: back home

Mission associates Caroline and Peter Finch are now back in the UK having finished service as mission associates in Malawi. Pray for them as they settle back into life in the UK during this strange time of COVID restrictions.

Europe, Middle East and North Africa

UK: food programmes in Plymouth

Mission partner Ruth Sayers asks for prayer for the coordination of the food programmes being run in the weeks leading up to Christmas for families and children who usually have free school meals. This year, the local churches and the community are unable to host their Christmas meals as usual due to the closure of the community hall by the council. Food programmes for this year are being coordinated by local churches and include a Christmas meal box alongside the usual food bank provision. Pray for Ruth and others from the church to find these people and to offer help where needed.

Spain: intensive online course

Mission partners in Spain are currently delivering their first two-week intensive online training course for 28 trainee spiritual directors – all cross-cultural workers. They write that they have been wonderfully surprised at the level of heart connection, even in the online context. Pray not only for God’s work in these trainee directors, but also for all those they serve around the world.

Ukraine: Tabernacle of the Living God church

Mission partner Alison Giblett asks for prayer for the Tabernacle of the Living God church as they meet together and fast this weekend. Pray for church growth and impact in the community.

Lebanon: new home and new school

Pray for mission partners Phil and Sylvie Good’s new house to be completed before winter really hits. As Phil and Sylvie and local partners Emil and Reem Bourizk together set up a new school for refugee children, pray for them to have all the equipment they need, for God to provide the right staff, and for children to feel welcome and safe at the school.

Nepal: mental health training

Mission partners Andrea and Andrew Young continue to be based in the UK, as they are unable to return to Nepal. They are conducting mental health training for United Mission to Nepal’s (UMN) staff support group, which includes Hindu and Buddhist as well as Christian staff members. Please pray for this new work, especially as there is a lot of stigma associated with talking about mental health.

South Asia: finishing service

Pray for R as she has finished mission partner service and is now settling back into life in the UK. Pray for a suitable job, ideally a teaching assistant position.

Philippines: Typhoon Vamco

Pray for the Philippines following Typhoon Vamco last week which has caused the death of at least 67 people. (Mission partners Eric and Sandra Read are safe.) Pray for all those who have lost loved ones, homes and more as a result of this, and pray for relief efforts to reach those that need it.

South Asia: conversion case

Mission partners in South Asia have recently added two more students to their homeschool, making nine children in total. Another child recently left their homeschool because his father feared the child would become a Christian, and the father is now threatening to file a conversion case. Pray against this being filed.
