Prayer News 21 May 2021

I will give thanks to you, Lord, with all my heart; I will tell of all your wonderful deeds. I will be glad and rejoice in you; I will sing the praises of your name, O Most High.

Psalm 9:1–2 (NIV)

Latin America

COVID-19 across the region

Please pray for accelerated vaccine rollouts across the region as the poorest countries continue to struggle to vaccinate significant proportions of their populations. Pray for ways to be found to help bring about a more equitable distribution of vaccines globally.

Chile: drafting a new constitution

Mission partners Alf and Hilary Cooper praise God that two of the evangelical candidates for the constitutional drafting assembly were elected during voting this last weekend. Sadly, Tomas from their church just missed out on a place on that body. Going forward, please pray for all those elected to the assembly to be guided by God in their work on a new constitution for Chile.

Argentina: AMARE event

Mission partner Catherine Le Tissier asks for prayer for an online event on Saturday 22 May to introduce people across the Province of South America to AMARE (Mother’s Union). Catherine will be co-leading the event with others, including local partner Mechi Tarragona. Please pray that people will catch the vision of what AMARE is about and that the event will help to propel this growing dynamic movement which brings people to come to know Jesus.

Asia

Nepal: COVID-19

Over the past month, Nepal has seen a huge spike in COVID-19 case numbers and the country is in lockdown. It is reported that there are over 9,000 new cases daily, a lack of vaccines and shortage of oxygen and hospital beds. Many are suffering because they cannot work and gain income. Please pray for Nepal at this time and for the church there seeking to minister and help amid the restrictions.

India: COVID-19

The new variant of the virus discovered in India has driven a surge of up to 400,000 (recorded) new infections a day (the true figure is likely much higher) and the health system is understandably overwhelmed. Pray for God to stop the virus in its tracks and bring relief to this exhausted nation. Pray for highly effective vaccines to be rolled out across the region.

Thailand and Sri Lanka: COVID-19

Thailand and Sri Lanka (along with other countries throughout the region) are also reporting record high numbers of coronavirus cases. In Thailand, more than 70 percent of the recorded cases are among people in prison. Pray for a high standard of medical care to be provided for everyone who needs it, for strength for overwhelmed healthcare workers, and for everyone who has lost friends and family members or who is struggling to make ends meet during this time.

Europe, Middle East and North Africa

Middle East: Bible translation

For mission partners involved in Bible translation in the Middle East, please pray for good relationships with local translators and the community. As they continue to work on the Bible translation, pray for a clear, concise translation.

North Africa: standing firm

Local partner A asks for prayer for a friend whose husband is wanting to become a Muslim, and is pressuring A’s friend to do the same. Pray for A’s friend to stand strong and be drawn closer to Jesus during this time.

Israel: peace

Please continue to pray for Israel as cross-border attacks continue between Israel and Hamas and hundreds have lost their lives. Please pray for peace in Israel and an end to the current unrest and conflict. Pray for all those who are engaged in the long hard work of reconciliation between the different communities.

Africa

South Sudan: training and teaching

Local partners Paul and Regina Lueth, both teachers at St John’s Bible College in Wau, ask for prayer as they prepare to train 40 pastors and evangelists for church planting at the end of this month. Pray for them also as they run a children’s conference aiming to teach children Christian values.

DR Congo: displaced families

Local partner and CMS-Africa country coordinator Jeff Sikabwe asks for prayer for the many families who have been displaced by a recent flood. The flooding of Lake Tanganyika has left many families homeless who were previously living in lakeside communities. Pray for the Church to take the opportunity to demonstrate God’s love to people by meeting their immediate needs for food, clothing and shelter.

Burundi: returning

Please pray for mission associates Alison and Paul Guinness and their children as they make plans to return to Burundi in May. Having had their travel plans disrupted twice already, this is not an easy process. Pray especially for the children to be at peace during this unsettling time, and for the family to quickly adapt to life back in Burundi when they do return.
