Prayer News 27 November 2020

Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name. For the Lord is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations.

Psalm 100:4–5 (NIV)

Latin America

Church leadership in the time of COVID-19

Pray for wisdom for church leadership throughout Latin America as restrictions are loosened and church communities are once again allowed to meet in person, with guidelines in place. Pray for those guidelines to be followed and for the chance to meet in person after many months to encourage many in their faith.

Central America: Hurricane Iota

As a result of Hurricane Iota, thousands are displaced, and the number of deaths is difficult to confirm due to widespread flooding and a confused situation on the ground. Clearly, for countries already struggling with the effects of COVID-19, this is another severe blow. Pray for those who have lost loved ones and all who have been displaced by flooding and landslides.

Chile: new constitution

After Chile’s referendum vote to draft a new constitution, pray for mission partner Alf Cooper in his role of seeking to bring together a united evangelical voice into the writing of the new constitution. There are many tensions within the country so do pray for peace and for God to shape the new constitution and bring unity to Chile.

Brazil: COVID-19

Mission partners Evaldo and Rebecca Reid Rodrigues ask for prayer for Brazil as cases of COVID-19 are again on the rise in the state of Pernambuco where they live, and people are afraid of a second wave. Almost 9,000 deaths due to COVID-19 have been registered in the state, but the actual numbers are very likely higher than the government is suggesting. Pray for people to take sensible precautions to stop the spread of the virus.

Africa

Ethiopia: peaceful resolution

Conflict arose in Ethiopia in early November and the country is now facing a civil war between government forces and troops in its northern Tigray region. Tens of thousands of Ethiopians have fled into Sudan over the past few weeks, and the United Nations has predicted 200,000 will have fled within six months. Pray for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

Madagascar: ongoing training

Mission partners Derek and Jane Waller, recently returned to the UK, request prayer for the ongoing work of discipleship and leadership training in the Diocese of Toliara. The pandemic has caused some disruption to the training, but it has been able to continue through Zoom.

Asia

Malaysia: healing for Beth

Mission partners Kate and Tim Lee ask for prayer for Beth, Jigsaw Ministries’ programme coordinator, who has discovered she has stage four ovarian cancer (meaning it has spread to other parts of her body). Pray for Jigsaw staff as they take in the devastating news and for them to know how to best support Beth during this time. Pray most importantly for God to intervene and do a powerful work of healing in Beth.

Malaysia: family

Please pray, too, for God’s guidance as Kate and Tim’s son, James, applies for university in the UK, for perseverance for their daughter Grace as she continues with her online learning and the same for Kate as she teaches online. Pray for their eldest, Rebekah, who is studying remotely from Germany and will spend Christmas there. For Tim as he rests and then continues with the work of Jigsaw whilst supporting Grace with her studies.

South Asia: visa renewal

Pray for mission partner F as she waits for her visa to be renewed, and pray for her and her colleagues as they do more teaching online.

South Asia: conference

Pray for Asia-CMS as they plan a conference for the people working in the area. Where the planning team face uncertainties and roadblocks due to the pandemic, pray for them to find digital solutions and workarounds.

Europe, Middle East and North Africa

UK: new season for A Rocha

Mission partner Dave Bookless writes that the global A Rocha family is pulling together, recently signing a new global covenant to work more cooperatively and make their governance more globally representative. They are thrilled to welcome Simon Stuart, one of the world’s leading conservationists, as their new executive director on 1 December. Pray for A Rocha in this new season, with a fresh leader and trustees and many opportunities.

UK: new job

Pray for mission partner R who finished service in Asia earlier this year. Pray for help as she fills out online applications, and for her to find a job that fits her current situation.
