Prayer News 28 May 2021

Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.

Isaiah 40:28–29 (NIV)

Algeria: returned church

Algerian Christians rejoice in the return of an appropriated church building in Mostaganem. The church building is one of several historically recognised places of worship taken over by local authorities, and was used as a public health centre until 2011. To date, authorities have ordered 20 churches to cease their activities. Sixteen of these churches have had their buildings sealed, while three others were allowed to reopen. Algerian Christians request continued prayer for the closed churches to be reopened soon and for the government campaign against the Church to cease. (This prayer request comes from Middle East Concern.

UK: CMS pioneer ordinands beginning curacy

Pray for all those beginning curacy this summer. As the restrictions resulting from the pandemic begin to lift, pray for God to shine a light on areas where new pioneering opportunities might arise.

Africa

DR Congo: Nyiragongo volcano

Pray for the people of DR Congo, who suffered another natural disaster last weekend when Mount Nyiragongo erupted for the first time in 19 years. The death toll has now surpassed 32 and more than 500 homes have been destroyed. Pray for the many people who have lost everything they own, and especially for those who have lost loved ones or who are still looking for missing children. Short-termers Anthea and Martin Gordon and their family, who are based in Goma, are all safe and well but will not be able to return to Goma yet. Pray for wisdom as they take their next steps.

Rwanda: Financial Freedom for Families (F4)

Local partner Josias Nkusi gives glory to God for various training programmes scheduled for the coming month. Pray for the F4 budgeting course taking place this weekend, for facilitators to communicate clearly and for participants to take in all they are being taught and to apply what they learn. Josias also writes: “Let us give thanks to God for the country is recovering from COVID-19. Some people have been vaccinated and many still await vaccination.”

Kenya: young people in need of Jesus

Local partner Rachel Karanja writes that she is in a very challenging context in Mai Mahiu, where many young people are looking for affirmation in the wrong places. Pray for God to show Rachel how to reach these young people with Jesus’ love.

Latin America

Awful milestone

This week, Latin America and the Caribbean reached the awful milestone of 1 million official deaths from COVID-19 (although this is thought to be a gross underestimate). Tragically, this is close to 30 per cent of deaths from COVID-19 worldwide, yet this region represents only eight per cent of the world’s population, and 90 per cent of those deaths have occurred in just five countries – Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Colombia and Peru. Only approximately three per cent of the region’s population is now fully vaccinated. Please pray for the region and for a rapid improvement in the situation.

Guatemala: raring to go

Mission partner Azaria Spencer writes that she has returned to Guatemala refreshed and with renewed energy and passion for ministry and life. Pray for her as she adjusts back to life in Guatemala.

Argentina, Bolivia and Paraguay: COVID-19 peaks

Please pray for these countries as Argentina and Paraguay struggle through their worst stages of the pandemic, and as Bolivia sees a sharp rise in case numbers. Pray for strength for exhausted health workers, for miraculous provision of oxygen and other supplies, and for vaccines to be administered throughout the region and bring numbers down rapidly.

Asia

South Asia: preparing curriculum and setting grades

Pray for mission partner E, who is busy preparing online curriculum for theology students. Pray for God to inspire E as he seeks to put together content in a way that engages students and helps them to learn as much as they can. Pray too for mission associate M, who was teaching at a school that recently closed, just before they were about to hold exams. Pray for wisdom for M and her colleagues as they decide students’ grades without these exams.

Nepal: COVID-19

Nepal has closed its border with India as numbers of cases of COVID-19 increase exponentially. Please pray for provision of oxygen and hospital beds, and for protection from burnout for healthcare workers. Pray for people throughout the region who have lost friends and family and whose lives will never be the same.
