I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. Philippians 4:12

Latin America

Honduras: prayer for the nation

This week, our prayer spotlight is on Honduras, a nation of nine million people in Central America. Please pray for unity and cooperation among Christians of various denominations in this context where too much importance is sometimes placed on denominational affinity. Please pray for an end to extreme poverty, homelessness and drug addiction, especially among children.

Pray for mission partner Steve Poulson, who works with street children in Tegucigalpa and Talanga, mentoring a young boy and engaging other mentors, so children from difficult backgrounds can have a better chance at a bright future.

Guatemala: back in the city

Having flown back to Guatemala on Wednesday, Mark and Rosalie Balfour are grateful for time with, and hospitality and kindness from, friends, family and churches during their six months in the UK. Pray for them as they transition back into life in Guatemala; for first meetings with friends and colleagues, sorting out phones and communication, getting used to driving in Guatemala again and beginning to look for a house to live in and use for ministry.

Bolivia: new youth ministry

Local partner Walter Toro asks for prayer as his church starts to invest more in their young people. Please pray for God’s clear leading as Walter and others in the church seek to inspire young people to live wholeheartedly for Jesus.

Europe, Middle East and North Africa

Britain: memorial walk

Please pray for the Birmingham Children’s Hospital memorial walk and picnic next Saturday, 7 September at the national arboretum. Ruth Radley will be spending time with families who have lost children as they gather together to remember, laugh, cry and receive support as they continue down a very painful road. Pray for those who have been coming for many years, and those for whom it will be their first year. Please pray for good weather as well as comfort and healing for those attending.

Britain: continuing to grow in faith

Please pray for a group of eight young people from Bradford who have been to a Christian camp for the first time. Jenny Green writes, “They have all been very open to the gospel but they need continuous nurturing. Please pray that the Lord keeps them close to himself now that they are home and that those who are following up with them will be provided with the gifts and skills they need to help them grow in faith and commitment.”

Europe and North Africa: more French speakers

Join mission partners M and T in thanking God for answering their prayers for more French speakers to serve in North Africa, where there has long been a great need for French speakers. M and T met and became firm friends with a French couple last year, and have now formed a partnership with the couple’s team in Provence. Pray for much fruit from this growing relationship.

Asia

Pakistan: travel and rest

Please pray for local partner Q, who is preaching at two big conventions in Pakistan, on 4 Sep and 4 Oct respectively, and who will also be attending a conference in New Zealand for ten days in September. Please pray for his health and for opportunities to rest, as excessive travelling has taken its toll on his health.

Nepal: aftermath of flooding

Please pray for Nepal as the country continues to suffer following exceptional monsoon rains in July, which caused landslides and widespread flooding. More than 100 people are missing, presumed dead, and thousands more have lost homes, livelihoods and their food stores. Please pray for God’s comfort and provision for all those affected, especially those who have lost everything, as they rebuild their lives.

Cambodia: prayer for favour

Chhinho Saing, a local partner, asks for prayer for favour with local officials and ministry officers who require Chhinho and others sharing the gospel to satisfy their protocols. He also asks for prayer for the staff, for health, safety, and for them to continue to receive the love, grace and energy to do the work in harmony with each other.

Africa

Kenya: CMS-Africa House

CMS-Africa ask for prayer for God to send faithful tenants so they can realise their hopes of raising revenue through renting out the extra offices in their new building: “Pray that all the available spaces will be rented out urgently. Pray for the team led by Canon Moses as they manage this property for mission work in Africa and beyond.” 

Ethiopia: more staff for St Frumentius’

Please pray for more teaching staff to join the team at St Frumentius’ Theological College, where Chris and Suzy Wilson work. The college needs more staff if they are to continue to provide an excellent standard of education and avoid burnout of those already teaching at the school.

DR Congo: the people of Boga

On 23 August, rebels attacked Boga, looting shops and homes in the commercial centre. It has been reported that 106 people were kidnapped in the raid and made to carry the loot into the bush. Please pray for protection during captivity and the swift release of those kidnapped, and for the families waiting anxiously for their return. Pray for an end to such terrible attacks and for the neutralising of armed groups.
