Prayer News 7 February 2020

So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness. Colossians 2:6-7 (NIV)

Africa

Madagascar: prayer for the nation

Roughly 70 per cent of Madagascar’s population of over 25 million live on less than $1 per day. The ruling governments have not been stable since independence was regained in 1960, causing the economy to suffer. Pray for honest government leaders to help bring financial and political stability. Over 50 per cent of the population count themselves as Christians, but a lack of discipleship allows syncretism to flourish; pray for well-trained Christians with a heart for discipleship to go where they are needed. Please also pray for our mission partners in Madagascar, Derek and Jane Waller.

Tanzania: work permit

Heather Johnstone’s work permit and residence visa expire on 14 February 2020, and many of her contemporaries have been refused new permits and visas over the last two years. Please pray for Heather’s permit and visa to be renewed if it’s God’s will for her to continue her ministry in Mara.

South Sudan: Transitional Government deadline

Many are anxious that the necessary preparations for the Transitional Government will not be complete by 22 February. The two parties are in deadlock over the issue of the number and boundaries of states, and the South African proposal of arbitration has not been well received. Pray for all parties to work towards a Transitional Government, and pray that any delay in its formation will not lead to any violence or conflict.

Europe, Middle East and North Africa

Turkey: missing Christians

Assyrian Christians in Turkey request prayer for an elderly couple missing from their village since 11 January. A confidentiality order has been placed on the investigation and it is believed that the authorities have not done enough to investigate the disappearance. Assyrian Christians request prayer that the Turkish authorities will thoroughly investigate their disappearance and that they will be found; for God to protect, comfort and strengthen the Assyrian community in southeast Turkey and give them a “peace that surpasses understanding” (Philippians 4:7); and for recent incidents not to become politicised and add to the complexities of the present situation. (This prayer request is from Middle East Concern.)

Britain: hope for the homeless

Anna and Chris Hembury are involved in Friday mornings at Selby St mission in Hull where people who are homeless and struggling with life can find warmth, food, a shower and someone who will listen to their frustrations as well as their hopes and dreams. There is also a time of prayer, worship and reflection. Please thank God for the fruit this is bearing.

Latin America

Chile: CIMA 2020

Please pray for Paul Tester as he travels to Chile to attend CIMA 2020, a Latin American youth mission mobilisation event. Pray for youth from the Anglican Church in South America attending and for emerging generations in the church to have a vision for participating in God’s mission locally and globally. Pray also for New Zealand CMS’s Andy Miller involved in the event’s organisation. Pray that these connections with those across the CMS mission network from around the world serving in Latin America will develop and grow as we follow God’s lead in developing a CMS mission movement in, across and from Latin America. Do also pray for mission partners Alf and Hilary Cooper and local partners Gabriel Parra and Nicolas Fuentes, who Paul will connect with in Chile.

Asia

South East Asia: wisdom and protection

Pray for wisdom for mission partner L as she has to deal with parents of children at the school where she works and their concerns related to the coronavirus. Continue to pray for a healthy pregnancy for L and the baby. Also give thanks for her husband A’s increased involvement with Celebrate Recovery and that he is taking on more leadership-related responsibilities.

Philippines: organic farming

Pray for Eric and Sandra Read and their work on the farm trying to use organic farming methods. A period of drought has meant they needed to water the banana palms; pray for rain, and in general against the effects of climate change. Continue to pray that all their hard labour will bear fruit.
