Pause with Scripture
The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and he helps me. My heart leaps for joy, and with my song I praise him.Psalm 28:7 (NIV)
Pray for Afghanistan, where power is about to be cut off. Since the Taliban took control of Afghanistan from mid-August, electricity bills haven’t been paid to neighbouring countries that supply about 78 per cent of its power needs, and the three-month deadline for payments has passed. Pray for a solution to this impossible situation.
Pray for the people of Pakistan, where at least 20 people have died and over 200 are injured following an earthquake on Thursday morning. Pray for those who have lost loved ones and who need to rebuild homes and lives following this disaster.
United Mission to Nepal (UMN) asks for prayer for the work and ministry of its two rural hospitals. Pray that UMN can continue to offer practical support and medical help to expectant mothers in need of specialised care despite the pandemic and heavy monsoon flooding. Pray for health workers trained in psychosocial first aid and healthcare as they support those who are suffering from trauma. Pray for greater capacity to produce the oxygen which is so vital for the survival of patients with COVID and for other non-COVID critical patients in the future.
South Sudan: reunited
Praise God that 5,000 South Sudanese citizens who were displaced after the 2013 conflict and separated from their families have now been traced and reunited, according to an International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) official. Another 4,000 cases are being followed up.
Uganda: breaking down barriers
Mission partner Helen Kisakye shares that she is involved in a new initiative bringing children with and without disabilities together. Once a week, two children with disabilities connect with two children from a mainstream school and do a dance workshop together over Zoom. Pray for these interactions to help break down barriers and promote a society where everyone is included.
Please pray for this year’s Africa conference, which is taking place this weekend. Pray for the hybrid format to work well and for people to be able to engage with the content whether they are at Swanwick or attending online. Pray for God’s blessing and protection on the principal speaker Rev Canon Dr John Senyonyi, former vice-chancellor of Uganda Christian University and chairman of the CMS-Africa board.
Low vaccination rates
Pray for those countries in the region where vaccination rates remain particularly low. As wealthier countries are able to buy up vaccine stocks at higher prices, let’s remember those countries that have struggled to obtain sufficient vaccines for their populations. Guatemala and Honduras in Central America are among those with the lowest vaccination rates, so please pray for vaccines to soon be more widely available.
Brazil: preparing for service
Please pray for mission partners Andy and Kati Walsh as they prepare for service in Florianopolis, Brazil, where they will be serving with marginalised communities and partnering with Vineyard Florianopolis, a church planted by Jimmy and Katia Rocks. Pray for everything to be in place for Andy and Kati to be able to begin their time in Brazil in January.
Venezuela: endemic poverty
Finally, in Venezuela a recent report has highlighted that three out of every four Venezuelans are living in poverty. While exacerbated by the pandemic, the main issues have been the government’s economic mismanagement of the country (particularly the massive oil reserves) and the bite of US sanctions following the re-election of President Nicolas Maduro, which was widely regarded as a fraudulent election.
