For the Lord takes delight in his people; he crowns the humble with victory. Psalm 149:4 (NIV)
Ethiopia: prayer for the nation
This week, please pray for Ethiopia and its population of over 100 million people spread across 80 different ethnic groups. As one of the oldest independent nations in the world, Ethiopia has a rich and highly distinct cultural heritage. Although now considered one of the Africa’s most stable nations with one of the world’s fastest growing economies, it is also one of the poorest because of its troubled past with many of its people starving and two-thirds illiterate. Approximately 60 per cent of Ethiopians consider themselves Christian.
Ethiopia: St Frumentius’
Please pray for our people in mission in Ethiopia, Chris and Suzy Wilson. Every day, Chris and Suzy bring students from five different ethnic groups together to worship, study and have fun together at St Frumentius’ Theological College. Though difficult and dangerous, Chris and Suzy describe the outworking of the college’s multi-ethnic vision as the most worthwhile aspect of their work over the past three years in Gambella. Please pray for Chris, Suzy and the students of the college as they practise Christian unity in this situation where many others from the students’ ethnic groups struggle to understand and tensions are running high.
Tanzania: finishing service
Miriam Knowles is finishing service after several years at the Neema Crafts Centre in Tanzania. Please pray for wisdom for Miriam as she looks at what God has for her next, and to have joy in the process. Pray for the families she has been supporting in Iringa, for God to continue working in their lives and, where necessary, for others to pick up where Miriam has left off.
Taiwan: new bishop
Catherine Lee is grateful to those who prayed for the election of the new bishop as requested in Prayerlines on 1 August. She writes, “The election went smoothly and the Rev. Dr. Lennon Yuan-Rung Chang was elected on the second ballot. The preliminary date for the consecration is February 22, 2020. Please do continue to pray for the Diocese of Taiwan in this transition period, for the church’s ongoing witness in the community and in partnership with other churches in the region.”
Mission partners B and K give thanks for the birth of D. Both mother and child are doing well. Pray for them as a family, that they will enjoy this special time and settle into a new routine before heading back to South Asia.
India: tensions in Kashmir
Please pray for Kashmir during this period of increased tension. Pray that the leaders will honour the agreements already existing and that the situation will not escalate to violence. Pray for the people in Kashmir who are currently under curfew and without communication.
Europe, Middle East and North Africa
Egypt: finding their place
Joe and Sarah Harvey ask for prayer that as they make their home in Egypt, they will find their place in the local community and discern how best to use their gifts through Joe’s role at the school, and Sarah’s skills as a nurse and mother.
Argentina: Old Testament translation and AMARE assembly
Nick Drayson has asked for prayer for a team of translators working to put the Old Testament in to the Toba language with the help of the Argentine Bible Society. The task has faced a number of setbacks, the latest being that one of the men has been arrested and is currently in prison. Please pray for him, the translation project, the Argentinian Bible Society and the justice system.
Mission partners Catherine Le Tissier and Shelley Stokes are helping to coordinate the 2nd assembly of AMARE (Mothers’ Union for this region), which is being held in Ingeniero Juarez from 16-19 August. Pray for the women attending, leading workshops and organising future changes for growth.
Brazil: Becky and Evaldo at ReVive
Enhanced short-termers Becky and Evaldo Reid Rodrigues ask for prayer for the older girls at ReVive. One of them has recently lost her brother who was stabbed to death by their father at home. Another girl has just gone onto the adoption list but there are currently no families or sponsors who are willing to take on a teenage girl. Please pray that God would speak into the hearts of those who could help and that she could finally find happiness with a family. Please pray for Becky and Evaldo as well, for a sense of direction for Becky and that Evaldo would really be able to get stuck into community work, which has been taking some time to establish.
Peru: Identity card
Anna Sims’s new identity card has been delayed and without it, she is unable to visit either of the prisons where she ministers. Please pray for it to be processed quickly!
