Prayerspace 02 July 2021

It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.

Galatians 5:1 (NIV)

Europe, Middle East and North Africa

Lebanon: a nation in crisis

Please pray for Lebanon, which has reached a crisis point. Ongoing issues, including a struggling economy, 95 per cent devaluation of the local currency, a gas shortage, unemployment, lack of medicine, lack of electricity and a lack of diesel for electricity generators, have led to considerable tension in the country. One after another, petrol stations, bakeries and other local amenities are shutting down, hospitals’ reserves of diesel for generators are running out, and there is no progress on the formation of a new government. Pray for God’s peace and mercy to be made known in the hearts of the Lebanese as well as protection for all.

UK: extra pioneer open day

Pray for CMS’s pioneer team as they prepare for an extra open day towards the end of July. Pray for the practical aspects of the event to come together at the right time and for the event to reach people who God is leading to CMS.

India: a new epidemic

After India’s devastating second COVID wave, the country is now grappling with tens of thousands of cases of a rare fungal infection called mucormycosis among recovering and recovered COVID-19 patients. The disease, which is far more deadly than COVID-19, has been declared an epidemic in the nation. Please pray for all those suffering from this and for those treating it, as well as protection for those at risk.

Myanmar: God’s intervention

An estimated 230,000 people have been displaced by violence and fighting in Myanmar this year and are in need of assistance, the United Nations humanitarian agency has said. Please pray for God to somehow reveal himself and his power as the country is on the brink of civil war. A United Nations report says that half the population will be in poverty next year if nothing is done soon. Pray for God to protect people and provide for them; many have lost their jobs. Pray for Christians in Myanmar to continue to witness and for the Lord to use this time to bring many people to Jesus. May the Lord complete his work in Myanmar!

Nepal: second wave of COVID-19

The deadly second wave has seen numbers of cases and deaths growing exponentially. Last week’s figures were slightly lower, but there were still over 1,000 deaths recorded. Hospitals have been overwhelmed and many people are struggling to access or afford the healthcare they need, both in cities and remote rural areas. People living in the poorest communities are struggling to feed their families due to lockdowns. One of our strategic partners is due to have a new general agreement signed with the government of Nepal, so please pray for this to be confirmed without further delay.

Prayer for mission in Africa

Please pray for the Africa prayer event being held on Zoom on Saturday 3 July at 10.30. For more information please click here and register for free via Eventbrite.

Uganda: COVID-19 spreading

Fear is rising in Uganda as the virus spreads across the country, including to rural areas. Hospitals are becoming full and overwhelmed, and in Kampala a football stadium has been pressed into use for treatment of the sick. Pray for strength for tired healthcare staff and wisdom for those making decisions about who to prioritise if and when resources are in short supply.

Tanzania: Kondoa diocese

CMS-Africa ask for prayer for Kondoa diocese, which is working in a Muslim-majority community. Pray for unity among Christians as they move into mission with one accord to see people come to Jesus.

Latin America

Uruguay: storm damage

Please pray for local partner Mechi Tarragona, husband Bishop Daniel Genovesi and their family, whose home and base for the pioneering mental health centre was recently severely damaged by a tree brought down in a storm during the night. Praise God they emerged unscathed, but they have had to move out. Pray that they might find alternative accommodation soon and be able to sense where God is leading them next. Please also continue to pray for Uruguay in general, as the COVID-19 situation has reached its zenith over the last few weeks.

Brazil: ongoing COVID-19 crisis

After passing 500,000 COVID-19 deaths last week Brazil continues to see high levels of numbers of cases although the numbers of deaths do appear to be reducing slowly. The country’s vaccination programme is being hampered by vaccine acquisition problems and slow uptake in some areas. Pray for vaccines to reach the people who need them and for people to accept them.
