God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Psalm 46:1
Latin America: quarantine
Paul Tester, CMS mission development manager for Latin America, asks for prayer for all those people in mission who need to travel from Latin America to the UK urgently; that they may be able to do so (most countries have now shut their borders and stopped flights in and out). Please also pray for those who are now locked down in quarantine, that they will be encouraged by God at this time and that they might share their faith and hope in Christ with their neighbour.
Brazil: prayer for the nation
This week, we focus on Brazil, which has a population of over 200 million. President Jair Bolsonaro has been accused of not taking coronavirus seriously, calling on mayors and governors to lift restrictions which are in place to stop the spread of the virus. Pray for wisdom for Bolsonaro and the authorities as well as individuals to know how to handle the changing situation. As much as 25 per cent of the country’s population may be living in favelas, where isolation and constant hand washing may not be possible. Pray for protection, and for people to find Jesus in this difficult time. Pray for our people in mission in Brazil: Alexandre Teixeira, Evaldo and Rebecca Reid Rodrigues, Andy and Kati Walsh, Debora and Levi Santana, Rosie and Stu Bayford, Daniel and Sarah Brito Medeiros, Thiago Oliveira, Andy Roberts and Rose Pereira da Silva, Jess and Mark Simpson and Jimmy and Katia Rocks.
Peru: Shalom Rehabilitation Centre
Due to the current global coronavirus crisis, Shalom is not working, but staff still need to be paid. Mission partner Pat Blanchard asks for prayer for the right decision to be made for the long-term future and the short-term difficulties; for the Shalom staff and the children with disabilities who are not receiving the therapies they need.
Uganda: medical staff
Pray for our medical staff in Uganda: Ian and Hanna Spillman as they set up the COVID-19 action plan at Kisiizi hospital; Heather Sharland and Tom Clare in their roles with the healthcare provision up in Arua; and the team at Potter’s Village.
Tanzania: impact of COVID-19
Please pray for the Rehema team in Mara as the project has had to be closed down for three months, which will have a big impact on the women’s income. The project will be able to pay two months of salary over four months to help. Please pray for the Neema Crafts Centre in Iringa which has also had to close for the moment.
DR Congo: effects of coronavirus
Like in so many places, coronavirus has been reported in DR Congo, closing schools and preventing people from meeting. Local partner Bisoke Balikenga writes asking for prayer; isolation measures mean he and others can’t share the gospel with people. Everyday life is also becoming unaffordable for many. Bisoke writes, “We used to buy beans at $10 for the ten kilograms but today is so expensive at $30 for ten kilograms, and fuel has also gone up. Really we need your prayers. Please pray for us.”
South Asia: redeployed as foodbank volunteer
Pray for R who is trying to be involved with a foodbank now that schools are closed, meaning she can’t do her usual work. Most people in her location will not have any money if they don’t have their business or jobs. Please pray for wisdom and that the foodbank will be able to provide food for people.
Asia: responding to the crisis
Pray for D and H who are working at a hospital preparing to take care of patients with the COVID-19 virus. Pray that hospital administration and staff will be able to make good use their learning from the SARS virus as well as the COVID-19 situation in Italy.
South East Asia: mission partner families
Pray for B and M and their family as they are planning to come back to Europe this coming Monday. Pray that their travels will go well and that they will be able to get all the documentation needed prior to travelling.
Pray for A and L and their family as they are expecting a baby in May. Pray that they will get the care needed for the delivery of the baby while the country deals with the coronavirus. Pray for their protection and wellbeing.
Sri Lanka: LEADS
Please pray for our partner LEADS, an NGO which works with traumatised children. Pray for wisdom as staff seek to respond wisely as well as rapidly to the changing COVID-19 situation. Pray for the children in their respite therapeutic centre, as well as staff across various projects, that they are all kept safe. Pray that God will open doors for them to continue their work during this time.
Britain: Partnership for Missional Church (PMC) during COVID-19
Please pray for the churches currently involved with PMC and at various points across their three-year journey. In light of COVID-19, many will find themselves faced with and responding to new and unprecedented demands locally. A bit like Paul responding to the Macedonian call in Acts 16, they may find themselves changing plans, adjusting, getting involved with caring for elderly neighbours, organising food supplies and trying to “do church” in quite different ways.
Please pray for spiritual and church leaders as they navigate how to best make the time to reflect and listen together, for protection over the spiritual practices in the lives of believers everywhere, as well as for meaningful ways of contextualising Jesus’ kingdom message in light of COVID-19, and for Nigel and Frauke as they try to discern how best to support the local teams over the coming weeks and months.
