Praying our core values

Short reflections and prayers on the core values of Church Mission Society: pioneering, evangelistic, relational, faithful. Written by Ian Adams, mission spirituality adviser

As we seek to be Christ’s people in mission, participating in his liberating mission, we are ready to try new things, to ask questions and to cross boundaries.

In your prayers today, spend some time exploring how you are being called to be pioneering in your context. What, in the name of Jesus, might be the new thing you are called to try? What is the question you need to ask? What is the boundary you can cross? Look for an opportunity today to make a first (or next) pioneering step in the direction that you sense you might be called to. And tell some friends about this adventure, asking them to pray with you and for you.

Jesus, help me to follow you today with
imagination, adventure and trust.
Guide me along the paths onto
which you are calling me.
And so may your kingdom come.

As we seek to be God’s people in mission we are ready to share Jesus in word and action.

In your prayers today, reflect on how you are being called to be evangelistic in your context. How might you share Jesus in your words? How will you share his story in your actions? Mission is not tomorrow’s activity. It always begins today. Be alert for the moment today when a Spirit-inspired opportunity comes so you can share Jesus in word and action.

Jesus, thank you for those who have shared your life with me.
Help me today to share you with those
around me, and to do so with
humility and boldness.
And so may your kingdom come…

Make a conscious choice today to give attention to the people with whom you are living, working or meeting. You can really only do this one person at a time. Pray that the Holy Spirit will enable you today to meet the people to whom you can be a gift – and them a gift to you. For being relational is about mutual care and belonging, not just a service that you are rendering to others.

Jesus, you gave deep attention to the people that you met.
By your Holy Spirit enable me to be present to
those you send my way.
May we be a gift to each other.
And so may your kingdom come…

We remain committed for the long-haul, however tough the task. It’s important to be real about what is tough. As you enter prayer today put into words (or pictures) the challenges you face. Then give them in prayer, open-handed, to Jesus who walks with you. You do not take this path on your own. His faithfulness is enough.

Jesus, you said that your yoke is easy, and your burden light.
So in confidence I pray:
Please take from me what I need carrying;
Walk with me; help me to walk with you.
And so may your kingdom come…
