[4] Praying the wilderness (Lent)

In the season of Lent, we remember the trial and temptation of Jesus in the wilderness.

If you can, take yourself into your local wilderness to pray. If you live somewhere rural, this may be relatively simple. If you live in the city or the suburbs look out for a place that carries some sense of wilderness for you. That may be natural wilderness, or it could be a place that feels alien to you in some other way.

While being careful not to put yourself in danger, try not to escape too fast to an easier setting. Let the discomfort of the place shape your praying. And remember that for Jesus when the temptations had been experienced, and the wild beasts had been faced, angels came and cared for him.

Hereʼs a prayer you can use to accompany this exercise:

God help me to face the trials of this wilderness,
and when this is done, send your angels
