[8] God coming close (Advent and Christmas)

As we begin a new year in the Church calendar, we focus on God coming close in Jesus. In December we pray with the personal aspect of that coming-close in mind.

The possibility of God can easily remain just that – an idea or a concept, even (or perhaps particularly) for those of us whose daily work is in the religious sphere. So the season of Advent is so important, opening us up to the possibility of God coming close. In the coming of the Christ child the idea gives way to presence. The possibility becomes experience.

Here’s a simple prayer action to reflect your desire for this shift to be true for you this Advent. Make your prayers in words, then as you fall into silence open your hands as if you are cupping them to receive water.

Here’s a simple prayer you can use to accompany this exercise: it acts as both a request to Jesus and a statement of your own intent.

Jesus
be here now
be here now
be here now…
