These prayer exercises put together words and action, mixing inner stillness with outer movement. Text and images by Ian Adams, mission spirituality adviser for Church Mission Society.

[9] Gift for the world (Epiphany)

As we begin a new year we focus on God coming close in Jesus. In January we are praying with the possibility that in the incarnation (the coming close) of Jesus, God is coming close to all people, to all the world.

This is the amazing epiphany (or the revealing, the realisation) that is Epiphany. The holy child Jesus is not just coming close for a few, not just for a particular tribe or for a nation, not even just for a religion. Jesus is a gift to all peoples everywhere. And our prayer is for the gift to be received and enjoyed.

Here’s a simple prayer action to reflect your desire for the gift of Christ to be received and enjoyed. Make your prayers in words, then as you fall into silence open your hands as if you are cupping them to receive water. When you are ready, then open your arms wide, a sign of God’s presence in and for all the world.

Here’s a simple prayer you can use to accompany this exercise:

Jesus
be here now
be received now
be welcomed now…
