Sound [3] Sounding a word

In the book of Genesis creation is described as beginning in the sound of something spoken. These prayer exercises explore the gift of sound in prayer, and our participation in this gift now through the hearing and making of sound. Text and images by Ian Adams, mission spirituality adviser for Church Mission Society.

In this series of prayer exercises we are exploring the place and possibility of sound in prayer. In this exercise our focus in on sounding a word.

[3] Sounding a word

In the Judaeo-Christian tradition there has always been an appreciation of the potential of the sounds we make. The word spoken often seems to carry even more weight than the word written, the exclamation voiced heard more powerfully than the exclamation marked on the page.

As you enter prayer today allow a blessing to form in you and take shape in sound, slowly repeat the blessing out loud. Carry this blessing with you into the rest of the day, and when appropriate, speak it to others. You might like to use this blessing.

In Jesus’s name
May you be blessed
And may you bring blessing
Amen
