Responding to severe flooding in March 2025, CMS partners provided immediate, vital support to indigenous communities in the Chaco region of northern Argentina.

Following heavy rains, both the Pilcomayo and Bermejo rivers burst their banks, affecting 19 communities. Of these, eight were cut off by the flood waters, leaving 800 people stranded. More than 500 people were evacuated in the region.

The Anglican Church of Northern Argentina, a key CMS partner, has a presence in many of these communities, so was well placed to help the people affected.

While government aid was available, the number of communities, long distances and poor roads made this response complex and slowed progress.

The church, with a presence on the ground, was able to set up soup kitchens quickly, meeting people’s immediate need for food. This was followed by two weeks of food aid.

Thanks to a generous legacy gift, CMS was able to support the church in this response, as well as helping to buy much-needed supplies to help communities clear up as flood waters receded.

The church distributed spades and wheelbarrows to clear mud, as well as mattresses, blankets, towels, toiletries, food parcels, clothing and plastic sheeting to people who lost homes or possessions.

Over the next two years, more than 80 deaf and physically disabled people will be gaining skills to earn a living, thanks to SAFI, led by mission partners Ben and Katy Ray.

The team at SAFI’s centre near Arusha, Tanzania, is training people with disabilities and helping them to start micro-enterprises.

The first 14 trainees have already begun learning woodworking, jewellery-making, tailoring and more, and three young deaf women have established the first enterprise: Zawadi Toys. The women behind this first venture, Victoria, Safiness and Zubeda, are making the dolls, dolls’ accessories and other toys for sale.

Their unique selling point is that the dolls can be accessorised with clothing made with “mitumba” (recycled clothing).

“It has been such a joy having these beautiful artisans working with us and very fulfilling to see them grow in confidence as they learn new skills,” say the Rays.

“The toys are already a popular item at our Dar es Salaam shop and we ask you to pray with us that these women would grow in business acumen and the knowledge of God’s love for them as their enterprise grows.”

The next three micro-enterprises off the blocks will see SAFI trainees printing t-shirts and selling ceramic jewellery and wooden accessories, with many more businesses to follow over the next two years.

Ben and Katy started the charity SAFI to create livelihoods, enterprises and opportunities for people with disabilities, who are often stigmatised and marginalised.

People from Tanzania and East Africa come to SAFI’s training and innovations hub, deaf-run cafe and crafts shop in Usa River. Ben and Katy have also started a Christian fellowship that meets at the centre every Sunday, and they are planning to run an Alpha course soon.

“Jesus is my life,” says 60-year-old Badar, who is not giving up on his call, despite rejection and ridicule.

Sixty-year-old Badar was a witch doctor before he met Jesus. He’s animated as he speaks. Clearly passionate and full of life. Asia-CMS partner Raj says he loves working with Badar for this very reason.

“Knowing God is the greatest joy of my life,” says Badar. “Knowing that he is the creator who created everything, who sustains us with the fruits and the vegetables that come out of the ground, and also that all parts of our bodies are created by him – that gives me joy.”

Badar is leading a small church in his village in remote, rural Nepal. He’s faced a lot of opposition from his community for choosing to follow Jesus, but Jesus is someone he’s unwilling to give up.

After faithfully following Jesus for 15 years, Badar is seeing some of those who ridiculed him come to know Jesus for themselves.

Faith out of desperation

It was in a time of desperation that Badar came to faith. His son was sick, and there was no treatment. “We went to doctors, [other] witch doctors, shamans, Buddhist priests – and we didn’t get any cure,” he says. “Then somebody from Beautiful Gate church told me about Jesus and the healing we could receive.”

Beautiful Gate is a church set up by and for people with disabilities. Pastor Adhikari was paralysed in 1984 when he fell from a tree while collecting fodder for his animals.

After the accident, he and his wife were ostracised from their community because of stigmas around disability in Nepal. Forty years on, they’re leading a thriving church, welcoming people of all disabilities and none to worship Jesus with them.

A new purpose

Badar found help for his son at Beautiful Gate church. But he also found his new purpose for living.

“Before coming to Christ, I had a lot of anxiety, I had a lot of pain, struggles in my heart and life,” he says. “But after coming to Christ, those things started to cease for me, and it was a kind of new way of life compared to my ancestors’.

“I was trained for 40 days at Beautiful Gate, and also for a month in India.” Through this training, Badar was equipped to minister to others.

Over the years, some of those who have found Jesus at Beautiful Gate church have planted daughter churches back in their home communities. Badar leads one of these seven churches, supported by Asia-CMS partner Raj.

“Brother Raj comes to our church from time to time, and he encourages us,” says Badar. “He shares the Word with us, and his presence is very encouraging in my ministry.”

Vital encouragement

Having encouragement is so important for pastors like Badar, who are outnumbered and can face a lot of opposition. Less than 2 per cent of Nepal’s population are Christians, and in remote areas the percentage is even lower.

Life for these Christians is increasingly challenging, with anti-conversion laws making it more difficult and dangerous to share Jesus.

In remote villages, Pastor Raj says Christians and their God are often blamed when something bad happens. “Many people come against us and there are lots of challenges,” says Raj.

“Many times people do not allow us to do the fellowship. [When someone in the family is a believer,] if anything happens to the family, they blame God. That is one of the big challenges our leaders face…. It is a huge pressure we are feeling.”

Badar says he hasn’t experienced any extreme persecution, but the stories he tells us show that he has faced rejection and ridicule for his faith in Jesus.

He describes how people have challenged him: “They say, ‘Why are you bringing this? These people are unholy…. So don’t come to us.’ It’s rare for people of my faith background to come to Christ.

“People have talked behind my back. They have ridiculed me for my faith in Jesus. They misunderstand me, and they accuse me, saying that I have followed this path for the sake of money – they claim that I follow Jesus because I get dollars. But no, it’s not that and I’ll continue on this path despite the ridicule that I face.”

“God has a time for everything”

Fifteen years into his ministry, Badar has seen miracles – and a few of those who mocked him for his Christian faith have come to know Jesus.

“Those people who have ridiculed me and rejected my message, two of them have come to know the Lord. One of them was a witch doctor like me, and now he has also taken baptism. So it seems God has a time for everything.” Badar says it’s important to be a living, loving witness for Jesus and to trust God to work in people’s hearts.

“I feel blessed when these people come to know Christ, and I see the change. I come to realise that we just need to trust in the living Word of God, and when we trust in that, things happen.”

Following Jesus and trusting he will work in his time and his way is challenging for all of us. But in a context like Nepal, it’s even tougher. Does Badar ever feel like giving up? Maybe surprisingly, he doesn’t. Why? Because, in his words: “Jesus is my life.”

Following a few decades of relative freedom to share the gospel, Nepali Christians are sensing a net tightening around their liberty. Yet, though they increasingly feel their outsider status, they aren’t giving up, as Naomi Rose Steinberg discovered on a recent trip to the country known as the Land of Truth.

Arriving in Kathmandu, I was surprised to learn that the time difference between Nepal and the UK is five hours and 45 minutes. Depending on who you ask, there are differing reasons for this unusual variation from the standard increments: some political, some geographical, some cultural. A typical response to the question is: “It’s complicated.”

Nepal in many ways is a complex country, facing multiple challenges: economic struggles, political precariousness and a geographically landlocked position between the influences of India and China. All of these and other factors have recently contributed to making it an increasingly tricky place to be a Christian.

Christianity in Nepal

The rapid growth of Christianity in Nepal in the decades since the country became a democracy in 1951 has been phenomenal, particularly since the 1990s. In proportion to population, it remains one of the fastest growing churches in the world. I’m told that in Kathmandu, you can’t walk more than two or three streets without being near a church, many of these being house churches or groups that meet in multi-use buildings.

However, there is a growing uneasiness among Nepali Christians, as anti-conversion laws become more stridently enforced due to pressure from other religious groups.

Nepal is officially a secular country, but many Christians told me that, as a minority religion (less than 2 per cent of the population) followers of Jesus are increasingly and often arbitrarily discriminated against. This is making them more wary of overtly sharing the gospel.

On the outside

The Christians I talked to described how they have been made to feel like outsiders in various ways. This included family opposition, with one man telling me how he’d been thrown out of his house and made to sleep in a field, and a young woman relaying how her mother used to beat her for her faith. I heard stories of funerals being held by families when a relative turned to Jesus.

There is also cultural and societal pressure; Christians are often viewed with scepticism and suspicion. There is a perception that Christians have abandoned their culture for something Western-influenced, even though the church in Nepal is led mostly by indigenous people.

Nepali Christians are sometimes accused of being in cahoots with Western Christians for monetary gain. One local partner told me that this perception grew after the catastrophic earthquake in 2015: “Many well-meaning Christian organisations came to help, but there were reports of Bibles being put in sacks of rice that were given to suffering people and this was viewed as coercive.”

The same partner shared that Christians are being scapegoated for economic and social ills that Nepal is facing. This is partly due to the influence of Hindu nationalism, which has been on the rise in neighbouring India with reports of ensuing violence against Christians.

Growing hostility

Some of the Christians I met have contended with threats of violence from their communities. One rural pastor told me he came out of leading a church service to find 300 people waiting for him, angry and shouting. “They threatened to beat me and smear me with ink,” he recalled.

Smearing ink on someone is a sign of abject shame. The pastor was taken into police custody but later released. When I asked him if this kind of intense opposition makes him think about giving up being a pastor or following Jesus, he said, “The Bible tells if you want to be a disciple you have to pay a price, there is cost involved. Maybe I am just paying the price of being a disciple of Jesus.”

Counting the cost

In the face of growing opposition, Nepali Christians are demonstrating patience, resilience and adaptability.

Some tell me that while they can no longer safely go door-to-door, hold evangelistic events or hand out Christian literature, they are discovering the importance of building relationships and being good living witnesses for Jesus.

They point out that others can see the love they show for people, how Christianity breaks down barriers of gender and caste, and how Christians treat people with dignity. And this is still drawing people to Christ; the church is still growing, though perhaps not as quickly as before.

CMS, alongside Asia-CMS, has long been committed to helping people in Asia deepen and strengthen their faith so they can withstand storms of antagonism and keep sharing the gospel from the margins.

The pastor who had been threatened credited his ability to withstand pressure in part to training he’d received from a CMS partner. In recent years, deep discipleship has become an even greater priority.

Given the increasing opposition Christians are facing in Nepal, and having seen firsthand the difference this commitment to discipleship has made in people’s lives, it seems that maximising these efforts couldn’t come at a better time.

In January 2025, following a period of intense fighting, M23 rebels took over the city of Goma, DR Congo.

During the violent conflict, millions of people were displaced, thousands were killed or seriously injured and homes and livelihoods were destroyed. Those caught in the crossfire were left fearful, traumatised, weary and crying out for peace after yet another breakout of brutality.

The wider world and the media lost interest in the crisis in Goma pretty quickly – but CMS supporters rallied and responded with prayerful generosity. Thank you.

So, what’s been done, what is the situation like now and what does the future hold? Let’s take a look.

Rapid relief, hundreds helped

In the aftermath of the violence in Goma, CMS partners were able to provide rapid assistance to more than 700 people, enabling them to get basic necessities like food, water and medicine.

In addition to this, our partners brought comfort and counselling to people who had witnessed the slaughter of their loved ones, and who needed someone to talk to begin working through their grief.

And with increased numbers of people looking to the church for help and hope, pastors received resources and support to cope with the demand, and to begin discipling newcomers to their churches.

Life on the edge

The situation in eastern DRC remains critical, as people work to recover and rebuild. The rebels in charge ordered all displaced persons to return home – but many have no homes to return to. There are reports of hospital raids, mob violence, sexual assaults and an atmosphere of fear and exhaustion.

Commitment to Congo

The people of DRC have suffered the effects of violent conflict for 25 years. It’s a longstanding struggle that requires long-term commitment to bringing about change.

CMS is committed to seeing long-term transformation in DRC and other countries where armed conflict has wreaked havoc for far too long.

Against a backdrop of destruction, we are steadfastly dedicated to raising up disciples – people who will show what it means to live in the way of Jesus. To promote love instead of hate and peace instead of war. Strengthening church leaders, helping people – especially children – work through layers of trauma and empowering people to break cycles of poverty and violence are all pieces of the puzzle.

Only Jesus can bring about the kind of change we want to see in DRC and beyond. So, let’s keep going with Jesus, with each other, to the edges.

When mission partners Lindsey and Steve Poulson in Honduras needed to find a manager for their cafe ministry, they immediately thought of renowned barista Carlos. There was just one issue: Carlos was no fan of Christianity.

Cafe Alas in the town of Talanga is part of Proyecto Alas, a project to create safe spaces for at-risk children and young people in a context where gang violence, corruption and poverty affect many and limit opportunities for change.

The project includes a mentoring programme, bringing consistent and caring adults into the lives of young people who often feel abandoned.

The cafe is one of several businesses that bring in income for the project and provide employment opportunities for the teenagers as they get older.

As the cafe thrived in 2022, Lindsey and Steve were keen to appoint a manager, so that Lindsey could transfer this task to local hands. The name that had sprung to mind for them was Carlos, one of the top baristas in Honduras!

They knew Carlos through his wife, Carolina, and knew he’d won national awards and had much management experience. Yet Carlos was wary of Christianity – after being hurt by church in the past, Carlos remained open to the idea of belief, but was not open to church at all. Lindsey and Steve weren’t sure how he’d get on in a faith-based business.

Little did Lindsey and Steve know that Carlos and Carolina had also been thinking about Cafe Alas, and dreaming of what Carlos might be able to do there.

Carlos and Carolina came to Lindsey and Steve with a presentation about their vision for the cafe.

Just like Lindsey and Steve, they saw the possibility of not just making money, but creating future employment opportunities for young people, to counter a common impression that it is impossible to make a decent living in Honduras.

A clash of cultures

After much prayer and reflection, Lindsey and Steve felt that God was prompting them to appoint Carlos as the cafe manager, and he started work.

The first year threw up challenges – Carlos had come from environments where the main priorities were to get supplies as cheaply as possible and to make as much money as possible. He was used to shouldering much of the responsibility himself, with employees making mistakes not given second chances.

This contrasted with the values of Cafe Alas, where people are of utmost importance along with high quality coffee and good service. Taking a Monday off as a sabbath for everyone, in order for staff to rest, seemed counterintuitive to Carlos – shouldn’t they be using every opportunity to bring in an income?

A turning point

After this slightly rocky first year, and with some personal challenges coming up for Carlos, Lindsey and Steve wondered if they had done the right thing in appointing him. Then an incident led them to consider letting Carlos go. Yet Steve first took time to talk to Carlos, and was able to offer pastoral support outside of the coffee shop.

Carlos came to Steve to say thank you, and observed, “That showed that you care about me, not just the shop. Anyone else would have just got rid of me.”

This was a turning point for Carlos, and a few weeks later he commented, “You guys are like the Jesus that I’ve read about in the Bible. Not like the other Christians I’ve met.”

The Proyecto Alas team had given Carlos his first example of people attempting to follow Jesus and share his love without hypocrisy. From that point onwards, Carlos was more open to faith in Jesus, though wary of making any commitment.

Alongside these changes for Carlos, the opportunity came up for the team to open a second coffee shop, several hours’ drive away – and they felt that God was opening doors for this to happen without them pushing too hard.

To start this new venture, Carlos and his family moved to the new location in January 2024, but it was hard being far from their usual community. Sales weren’t as good as everyone had hoped, which also put pressure on the family’s finances – so Carlos and the wider team were tempted to give up.

Running on faith

Yet through it all, God was still at work. Around half way through the year, Carlos called Steve out of the blue. He said, “A weird thing happened – a pastor came into the coffee shop and started chatting to me. The pastor said he had been on a prayer walk, saw Cafe Alas, and felt God put something on his heart to share with me.

“Then he started sharing a number of things with me and perfectly explained my situation, right down to tiny details, even though he had never met me. Then the pastor said, ‘So far this coffee shop has been run on the faith of someone else, but now it needs to be run on your faith.’”

Carlos felt challenged and convicted that this was God speaking. Carlos started seeking God, praying with his family and even going to a local church with his wife and son. Soon after that, he decided to give his life to Jesus.

Steve says that he has noticed a real change in Carlos in the months since he decided to follow Jesus: “At the beginning of 2024, his attitude was that he needed to work super hard to make this cafe work. After this step of faith, his attitude is now about making sure to pray.

“He has a much more relaxed sense of this not just being on his shoulders, as he is relying on God to make things happen. And as Carlos grows in faith, he is praying and listening to God – and now sometimes I am being ministered to by him.”

Kiran, Rida and Farah all grew up in devout Muslim families in the Middle East. Choosing to follow Jesus made them outsiders in their communities. But today these three women find themselves on the cutting edge of mission – helping hundreds of others follow Jesus. 

Meeting Jesus

Kiran, Rida and Farah all came to Lebanon as refugees from Syria with their families in recent years. As refugees, they were already pushed to the edges: outsiders living in a foreign culture, away from almost everyone they knew and loved. Little did they know, they would soon be pushed to the edges even more.

Kiran used to live in Beirut, not far from a church which has had links with CMS for several years. Kiran would often pass the church on her way to the market, and remembers seeing a Bible verse on the door: Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. “I felt like that message was meant just for me,” she says. One day, Kiran went in. As she stepped inside, a woman started apologising to her, saying the church wasn’t giving away food or other supplies that day. Kiran explained that she wanted to know what was happening in this building. Why had she seen so many people coming out with smiles on their faces? This was the beginning of Kiran’s faith journey, and not long after, she started following Jesus and became part of the church.

Farah and Rida also visited churches near where they lived and were both touched by Matthew 5:44: Love your enemies, bless those who curse you. “That really stayed with me – there’s nothing like that in the Quran,” says Farah. Rida read the entire Bible and ultimately found “no violence or hostility” in it, in stark contrast to the violence of ISIS she had witnessed in Syria. It wasn’t long before Farah and Rida gave their lives to the Lord, too.

Pushed even further to the edges

For Kiran, Rida and Farah, making the choice to follow Jesus was costly. All three women faced intense opposition to their faith.

“When I was first exploring faith, I felt that the devil was telling me that it would be better for me to keep living in darkness,” remembers Kiran. And things got worse: the day she was baptised, Kiran’s father-in-law kicked her out of the house and her entire extended family cut all contact with her.  

Farah’s husband used to offer her money and more freedom if she stayed away from church and he would punish the children for singing Sunday school songs and asking questions about Jesus.

Rida’s uncles ridiculed her and one of them declared that killing her would be permissible because she had left Islam. In his eyes, she had dishonoured the family.

But in the face of hostility, divorce, rejection from family and friends and even death threats, these women are still standing strong today.

Learning to lead

Kiran, Rida and Farah’s pastors introduced them to a CMS partner called TN, a movement of Christians helping disciples grow in Christlike character and develop their leadership skills. TN offers ministry training specially tailored to Muslim-background believers (MBBs), including in-person training in groups as well as regular one-to-one support. This helps people like Kiran, Rida and Farah to grow in their relationship with Jesus and develop spiritual practices to sustain them in their faith as well as equipping them to share their faith and disciple others.

Rida serves in southern Lebanon, a region which is 90–95 per cent Shia Muslim. She had been sharing Jesus and discipling people there for two or three years when she did some training with TN. Through the training, she was encouraged to consider how to make her ministry even more effective. Rida was supported as as she came to focus on discipling young people.  

Farah found the training with TN gave her practical tools to share the gospel and make disciples. “The training strengthened me, encouraged me in my calling and made me a better servant of the Lord,” she says. Farah is now looking after two small groups and is discipling followers of Jesus from both Muslim and Christian backgrounds.

Kiran was already sharing Jesus and making disciples in six areas in southern Lebanon. Following the TN training, Kiran is now ministering in 12 areas, looking after 16 discipleship groups and over 200 families.

TN’s training has helped Kiran, Rida and Farah and many other women build a solid foundation of faith and provides the ongoing support they need when things get tough. And they know they are connected to a whole network of Christians that stretches across the Middle East and North Africa.

Mission partner Garry Ion reports on Carlisle’s Community Shed, from seasonal crafts to a former prisoner sharing his faith.

Whether being productive in the shed, nattering over a coffee or enjoying a Garry’s chicken burger special butty, we remain very busy.

Unlike other Men’s Shed projects, the Community Shed is open to both women and men who’ve usually been referred to us through social or mental health services and associated organisations and charities.

We also increasingly welcome new members through probation services and their Rebuilding Lives programme.

Care-full and prayer-full

What also sets us apart from most other sheds is our desire to care holistically for body, mind and spirit.

Endeavouring to tread carefully and prayerfully, we share our faith through conversation and life experiences.

The seasonal crafts are also a talking point about the gospel message: the planter and the seed of faith sown that flourishes, the bird box and God’s love for his creation, and Christmas decorations and the coming of Emmanuel. Last year during our run up to Christmas we enjoyed fellowship in the shed using our Christmas tree decorations as a backdrop to Bible readings by candlelight.

Welcoming space

As winter approached, we started a new programme called Community Space. You may recall previous Warm Space initiatives across the country that came about due to the cost-of-living crisis and isolation after lockdown.

By request, our Community Space is an offshoot of this where we meet in the evenings, in a warm space adjoining the shed, for a more in-depth chat, cuppa and access to indoor games including table tennis, pool and darts.

It is nice to see several of the lads who have struggled previously with alcohol or drug addiction coming along. This is a problem which often increases at this time of year.

It has also been nice to fellowship and see friends be transformed and grow in faith as we build friendship together.

(Creative) freedom for prisoners

Two new members recently joined us on remand from prison. With a probation officer and tags secured to their ankles, we were initially concerned about their attendance. But both quickly settled, getting on very well with the rest of their groups. They are talented and creative; having gained these skills while inside prison, they now share carpentry skills with members of the shed.

One of these new members had become a Christian while in prison and has begun to share a little of his testimony – from violent gang member, stabbed, fighting for his life, and then presented with the gospel by a prison chaplain. This seed of faith has grown and his charisma in Jesus is clearly seen and heard in the shed.

Last week he invited me and a few other members to a Men’s Breakfast at Carlisle Cathedral where he has started fellowshipping. In the few months we have known him his tags – “shackles” – have been removed from his ankles, he no longer needs to be chaperoned by an officer and is now encouraging shed members, including me, to church activities.

We are delighted to announce that Rev Jeremy Moodey has been appointed to succeed Charles Clayton as chair of trustees from April 2025.

Following a prayerful and extensive search and interview process, the CMS board of trustees has unanimously chosen Rev Jeremy Moodey to be the next chair.

Jeremy is an ordained minister in the Church of England and brings extensive experience as a Christian charity CEO.

He also spent 10 years in the UK Diplomatic Service, serving in Pakistan and Italy, and 15 years as a City investment banker.

He has been appointed as a co-opted trustee and will take over as chair when Charles Clayton steps down from 1 April 2025.

Jeremy says: “I first came across CMS back in the 1980s, while working in Pakistan, meeting amazing people like Dr Ruth Coggan (daughter of Archbishop Donald Coggan), who ministered at the Pennell Memorial Hospital in Bannu, in what was then the North-West Frontier Province. The pastor in the church in Islamabad where I worshipped was also a CMS mission partner.

“The witness even then was very much ‘at the edges’, so I am delighted to be re-engaging with CMS so many years later as a trustee, and in due course as chair of trustees.”

Jeremy moved from the City into the Christian charity sector in 2009, serving first as CEO of BibleLands, a Christian development charity focused on the Middle East and established in 1854. He led its successful rebranding as Embrace the Middle East in 2012 and had the opportunity of working with some of CMS’s partners in the region.

In 2017 Jeremy moved to become CEO of Sons & Friends of the Clergy, an Anglican clergy benevolent charity founded in 1655. This too he led through a successful and award-winning rebranding, as the charity became Clergy Support Trust in 2019.

In 2021, after retiring from full-time work, Jeremy was ordained into the Church of England. He currently serves as a self-supporting and part-time assistant minister at St Mary’s Church in Chesham in the Diocese of Oxford.

He also sits on the General Synod of the Church of England, and as trustee-treasurer of Trinity College Bristol, an Anglican theological training college.
